Per the terms of my contract, I get the last two weeks of February as vacation. If I renew with my school, I get an additional two weeks of vacation. Since I get most of January off, and the last two weeks of February off regardless of whether or not I renew, should I also be asking to get the first two weeks of March off? If I don't, then it feels like I haven't gained any extra vacation by renewing, but it might piss off my school and they will probably argue that school is in session during that time. What would you do?

As a teacher you should never expect to get time off during the semester. So what you should do is work to move that vacation around during the break to get whatever time you should have worked in February off. (It's not like you do anything functional then anyway.)

If you have it good, make sure not to piss them off.

If you negotiated the last two weeks of Feb. as holidays when your contract states the two weeks home leave for renewing must be taken during the last two weeks of your contract (and your new contract starts Mar. 1), you 'blew it'.

Try to get those two weeks of holidays moved; or take solace in the fact that the year you don't renew, you'll be able to leave two weeks early.

I don't see how I "blew it." Since my contract already includes a lot of extra vacation, it's not really possible to get the two extra weeks off unless it's during the regular semester. I guess I won't say anything since I don't want to push them for more time off.

Well the school is "giving" you far more than two weeks extra vacation just because. Why should they give you another 2 weeks because you are renewing (I know it says so in the contract, but then your contract probably says 20 days vacation and you're getting 40 or so). The fact that you are getting all that extra vacation is reason enough to renew and you know it! Wink
