I keep meaning to get my insurance explained to me, but maybe it's common knowledge 'round here...
I bought some LIG insurance when I made my bike legal. (The cheapest I found was 250,000) and of course I have the National Health Plan. But...
Might either of them cover my bodily damage if I get in an accident?
Some people I met claimed that there is no insurance in Korea that covers motorcyclists medical costs in the event of an accident, hence leaving them lying bloody in the streets because it's their fault for riding a two-wheeler.... |

I have HiCar (a Hyundai company) and pay 210,000 a year for my Mirage 250cc. That covers damage to another vehicle and bodily damage to other people, not to me.
NHI only covers sickness, not injury. I would have to buy extra insurance to cover my personal body in case of a wreck. As far as I know, insurance companies won't sell this to you if you drive a motorcycle. You would need to go through a 2nd company and I don't have any experience with that. |

Oh. Pooh.
Go through a second company? Like, an agent who will arrange injury insurance with the company for me? |

D,
I'm glad you asked this. I've been meaning to get insurance as well. Good information to know about personal injury.
Just to add a little story. My wife was clipped by a car a couple of weeks ago. Fortunately, the guy stopped and my wife wasn't hurt badly. He did take her to a local hospital and she got checked out. When she called me, I went over there and the first thing I asked is whether or not we needed to file a police report. I also told her that I had read that accidents between pedistrians and a car in Korea are assumed to be the cars fault 99% of time (much like in the US) and that NHS won't cover any of the costs, therefore she needed to make sure to get the guy's insurance information. |

correct info. make sure to get a confirmation number from the ins. co. You'll need to provide the hospital with that info. for billing. |

But motorcycles aren't peds, and so then if we're involved in an accident, supposedly it's assumed that it was the motorcyclist's fault, because we're all Evil Knievel. |

That is correct, a motorbike, motorcycle or any vehicle would be assumed at fault in an accident with a pedistrian. The way some people drive, you would think they are Evil Knievel. |

Yes. Bassexpander has a podcast on midnightrunner.com about extra insurance and what NHI doesn't cover. It's not through your auto/bike insurance company, it's through a separate party. BE wrote that he got extra personal accident insurance, but he could not ride a bike bigger than a 50cc. I want to research companies that will give me accident insurance in the spring when my long rides resume, so Darashii, keep me/us posted if you do any further research. |

Peds aren't going to cause me bodily damage and I believe my insurance covers me injuring others. My question is clearly about bigger vehicles injuring me.
Interesting, Mr. Bop. Hopefully I'll have time and patience to look into it before it's time for riding again! |
