The censored Internet is the latest broken promise on press freedoms. In bidding for the games seven years ago, Chinese officials said the media would have "complete freedom to report." I still can't believe people are stupid enough to believe the Chinese gov't.

Regarding internet access, I think it's not that they don't want the foreign media to have complete access to it (because the media has other ways to get their reports out of the country - like video phone).

It's more about the poor peasants somehow getting information about how they're working hard boring jobs for a $1 a day while westerners cruise the malls dropping hundreds of dollars on *beep* they don't need.

But you know the way Fox and CNN twist facts around. This time it's to make it look like the Chinese gov is punishing the foreign media.

Yeah, yeah. I know, I know. They broke their promise. But they probably don't have the slightest idea what they're doing in China from one moment to the next so they improvise everything. Does that sound familiar? Very Happy

Yeah, it's not going to put journalists in a very good frame of mind. This is a PR move for china... the olympics. The biggest pr move on the planet. Last thing you want to do is piss off the audience.

The CCP's intended audience is the Chinese people. I don't think this move will piss them off.

The BBC was mad that they couldn't access falun gong sites in China. They did a whole report about it.

It was revealed on NPR today that the IOC knew from the very beginning that there would be censorship but lied to the public about it. The original deal was made behind closed doors and no one knows that they agreed on.

That's a good point too. Most propaganda is for internal consumption. And it will be, at the end of the day, easy to cherry pick good media stories showing how all the world has come to China and are amazed by its power and greatness and how everyone in the world wishes they were chinese. Since all of europe wishes it was chinese, how can you people out in the provinces even think about being your own nation? You must be a silly people to want independence and silly people need to be crushed. No one will feel sorry.

Can you imagine if the type of riots that happened in Korea happened in China? Even a small issue, if it had .1% of the population behind it would be enough to cause major mayhem.

no censorship for me in Shanghai!! I have access to Amnesty International and Wiki and Blogger and the CBC--which was banned for their stance on the Falun Gong.

The real question that should be asked is why China, even with its censorship, still has more free speech than a place like Malaysia, which has free speech in its constitution--and why no one is reporting those kinds of stories.

Why? What do you get out of that?

The Chinese will be pissed if its a disaster. Yes, the CCP will have egg on its face, but it might not be worth the damage to the very fragile Chinese collective psyche.

Seems like China loses more credibility by censoring news than they might gain from presenting a "harmonious society".

I've noticed South Korea blocks the North's sites that I used to access in the US. I guess it's the new president's stance. Drag.
