Hey guys,

Hopefully someone can help me out.

Does anyone have a worksheet that evaluates the learning styles of their students when it comes to ESL? I can't really make a test as I'm not qualified to do any sort of evalutation but I would like some way for my students to determine their own unconcious learning styles.

I was thinking about ones relatd to this article:

http://www4.ncsu.edu/unity/lockers/users/f/felder/public/Papers/FLAnnals.pdf

Sensing VS intuitive
Visual VS verbal
Active VS reflective
Sequential VS Global
Inductive VD deductive

Preferably in KOREAN! But really I'll take anything you have.

Thanks so much in advance if anyone has anything!

Here's a nice little quiz you can use with students.

Learning Styles Quiz

When I get to the office, I'll send a link with something more accessible for Korean students...

PS. I also have a lot of excellent material for the MBTI. For higher level students, it makes a nice activity.

Thanks! I have to simplify this for some of my students but I think it'll work if I soften up the words a bit for them. My focus is to have students aware of their styles so they can focus and understand what way is going to be best for them to learn English.

I'll be waiting for the Korean friendly version.

Thanks again DD. Always the man

Even thought it's a little old, the best test is the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) by Rebecca Oxford. Some of the questions refer to learning techniques or strategies that I have some issue with (but, frankly, you should take her ideas over mine), but they all relate to findings in second language acquisition research that were known at the time the test was first made.

The problem is that you have to really know your shit to explain the rationale behind each of the questions (there's no answer key) so that if a student scores a lower grade you can explain what they might try and how it might affect their learning.

I think she has upgraded the test in recent years in terms of content, but I can't find any links to anything new. The older Korean version and English version are here (on the bottom right entry).

Here's the one I have used before. Although this theory, in my experience is true it is not practical most of the time to taylor specific lessons to loads of different learning styles.

It is better if you rotate the learning activity based on MI from lesso to lesson.

If you scroll down to the EXCEL pupil test, this one may be more user freindly + you can adapt it.

It should be noted that Gardner's MI theory is just that...a theory and an unproven one at that. I did research on this for a paper and there are no studies showing the theory as valid. It was accepted by schools at face value yet never proven in any study.

In the end I dropped it from my research project.

Now this was four years ago...and perhaps some work has been done, but in 2004 there weren't any studies...at least that I could find

I don't think there ever has been any serious research done on it. I personally put it into the philosophy area of my teaching knowledge and use it as a reminder that there are a number of different ways I can approach a lesson, but it's by no means gospel truth.

I have such a worksheet and it is a standard issued one for ESL students.

It is FREE.

Thank you

I can see the lot of you are NOT teachers back in your home country.
there has been EXTENSIVE research on ESL learning by numerous high profile universities.

However you need to be able to first understand the results. This needs some training and teaching qualifications. You need some Psychology of education first....
If you give the test without interpreting the results properly and then act on this you are going cause more problems.

I am not being an ass here, I need people to realize testing isn't as easy as simply giving a "test".

What I would do is start by giving a learner needs assessment.
- you do this by giving a test out of 50 questions that are incremented in difficulty, "leveled".

Here is a link to a sheet for your use.
http://www.wallawalla.edu/form/?esl-needs-assessment

The skills test you make for the students must cover these areas

Oral(communication), Reading comp, Writing, Listening Comprehension (understanding).
