I'm considering a position there and I was wondering, what are some pracitcal perks?

One perk that comes to mind is ...Do I get discount on public transit? Any other freebees at work?

No discount on T-money or free admission to museums. Basically just being in Seoul is the perk.

You get a cheap lunch at school, anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 won, and it's not the stuff they serve the kids, it's only for the teachers.

Other than that, you might get a little more respect. Some Koreans hear you are in a public school and say, "Ah, you are a real teacher."

You get to go out with the other teachers in your school and get super drunk a few times a semester, unless they are xenophobic and "forget" to tell the NSET about the party.

The district may also take you on a field trip or to a dinner once or twice a semester.

The contract will be followed and upheld by the SMOE office.

You never work on Saturdays, unless you agree to for overtime or additional days off.

Not true in my case. It's cheap I guess, but it's the same stuff they serve to the kids and it's horrid. I'm tolerant of Korean food but this stuff is beyond bad. It has made me vomit once or twice. I usually take my lunch now. :S

Which is more often than not the case.

Just as long as they keep up their veneer of niceness during my 8 hours in the day then we are all sweet.

I don't work for SMOE andI don't work for GEPIK - but I already have been getting all those perks for the last 7 years...

I heard teachers employed by SMOE had to be at their schools from 08:30am ~ 4:30pm.. (even if they have no classes in the afternoon)..

(I only have to go to school at 1pm and I leave at 5pm) - yet I am still paid 2.6mil+ (for my afternoon job)

I heard teachers employed by SMOE get sent away during summer/winter vacation to teach at camps down south..

(I get to keep teaching at my school - and also get vacation time (I dont have to go live in some domitory-style camp down south))

I guess SMOE doesn't have anything that I want...

biggest perk is you aren't working for Gepik - I worked for SMOE one year and from the stories on this board, seems like that's a really big perk Wink

Ok. Bully for you. The OP asked about SMOE perks. Sure, many are available elsewhere.

Not all teachers do sleep away camps. Nowadays, most don't. Those that are asked can also refuse. Camps are in the contract, but so are working hours. Teachers have refused and SMOE can't force them do stay away from their homes.

The lunches are cheap. Hit or miss. Cheaper than anything I could buy or make (unless I want to eat peanut butter and jelly everyday). I remember reading something about cheaper car insurance for public school/government employees. I`m not sure though.

I have the opposite approach with the lunches. Why would I pay for something that I typically don't enjoy eating? Laughing

I would definitely be interested in knowing more about the auto insurance thing, however. Mine is coming up for renewal at the end of January.

Lunch is hit and miss maybe 6/10 are good 3/10 I can eat and 1/10 I leave and go out to eat. Frequent dinners out are good if you like to/want to hang out with your co-workers. I consider random canceled classes as a perk as well as at least once every two weeks a day or a half day off. Also, as my school has dedicated English teachers (2 of them) It is not my job to plan any lessons, I just roll into class and teach their lessons with them. This means no prep work (other than them telling me what they want me to do) and no work outside of the classroom. But far and away the biggest perk of working for SMOE is the vacation time, at my school anyway. Summer vacation included 10 days of 9-12 camp and winter vacation will also include 10 days of 9-12 camp the rest of the time is all vacation. Of course this is not the case at every school.

My school hired a private company to make the lunches. 2,500 won daily buffet. Only the spaghetti was subpar.

It's 9 to 4 30, but you basically jack around after 1 pm....you can leave to do errands...every teacher in the school does it....hell, I've left to just get meals...nobody cares....
