An essay style summary of one of their favorite books or movies might be fun. I've had students do that before... they sometimes would compare and contrast movies like Narnia & Harry Potter. Sometimes they've written essays on how to succeed on American Idol or other shows like that... (process analysis style).
Descriptive essays about their ideal home, vacation, boyfriend/girlfriend etc have also been successful with my classes. I try to stay away from controversial topics with kids. If they're doing TOEIC or TOEFL though you're probably better off just sticking to material in the book.
just thought of another one...
I read an awesome essay by a high school boy from Spain on the effects of standing up your girlfriend on a date. I've loved cause/effect writing ever since. I'm sure you can come up with a wealth of topics for middle school kids using this type of writing style. |
