'Miracle dog' returns after being trapped by a snare for 2 weeks
Quote: |
An Oak Hill woman has been reunited with her "miracle dog" after he survived two weeks in the wilderness of southwestern New Brunswick, trapped with a snare around his neck.
Sharon Caswell said she let Earl out to play on Nov. 3. But when she called the dog's name, it didn't come back.
When all efforts to find her husky-shepherd mix failed, she thought he was gone for good. She even gave away all but a scoop of her bag of dog food to her son.
That's when she said something amazing happened more than two weeks later. The dog returned home with a snare around his neck.
Earl's neck was covered in blood, a wire had embedded itself into his neck and he had lost weight.
"We just call him our miracle dog. And now it does look like he had a head transplant because he had stitches all the way around [his neck]," Caswell said.
"But he's doing really well now, he's coming back. He's gained a bit of weight, you know, he's looking healthy again."
Not illegal to have snares, says dog's owner
After the ordeal, Caswell said she called the Department of Natural Resources to see if what happened was illegal.
"They said it's not illegal to have snares out and there's no law saying they have to check them," Caswell said. "So I just hope that people will check their snares and be responsible. I mean it's a cruel way to trap an animal to begin with. That could happen to anybody's pet."
The dog has been home for nine days now. Caswell said she doesn't understand how he survived for so long and does not know who freed Earl from the snare.
When Earl returned, he was so hungry from his capture, Caswell said, that he went straight for her cat food. It was at that point that Caswell's remaining scoop of dog food came in handy.
This isn't the first time Earl has shown up on her door.
The dog had been abandoned and showed up on her doorstep in March, when they took him in.

The animal was in that snare for two weeks!
Just think about all the wild animals that die a slow death that way. |
