So I walk the same road to school as my students. It gets quite crowded at 8.25 am and in front of me I saw a 2nd grader go up to a smaller 3rd grader and take his scarf off him and proceeded to wrap himself up in it.

I watched this for a nanosecond and went 'HOI'

He didn't look round but his mate did - 'tell him to stop'

I proceeded to half strangle the bully with his new scarf informing him that when I was his age I would have kicked his arse all over the street - I then put the scarf round my neck and told him to take it off me. He didn't fancy that so much and scattered off.

I gave it back to the boy it belonged to - you could see the delight of the kids who saw it - there is obviously a problem with bullying in Korean schools. Evil or Very Mad

I'm sure you would have given him a stern talking to in a language he barely understands - while laughing at you for being a soft arsed waygook - my method was more effective.

With your kind of thinking - no wonder the education systems in our respective countries are going down the pan. Rolling Eyes

Can't say I would have acted differently.

Although, as a bully and as a victim I can tell you...

Trying to prevent bullying by bullying reinforces it. When I was a bully and parents tried to stop me by doing something physical or yelling, that only encouraged me to be "braver" and "stronger". Or at least that was my perception being a mini- asshole at the time.

Ideally, what you should have done is talk to the victim. Encourage him to explore ways to prevent the bully by being assertive but non-violent. Bullies don't pick on the strong. To be hoenst, as cruel as this seems, I see changing the weak victims into strong people as a better life long alternative than making a bully stop his behavior. In honesty, some bullies have social issues or feelings of infeority that originate from home. For example, I grew up with a mother in my life since a young age and my father was always working. So pent up frustration of having no attention caused me to get in other ways.

In this case he may not always be a bully, maybe just in that instance.

Some people in this world need an ass kicking to teach them things. Reacting to a bully by whipping his ass is perfectly acceptable. I hope that kid kicks the hell out of that kid later in life.

I am sure the OP did not really half strangle the child. I think he did the right thing. He made a point, and stood up for a weaker student all at the same time.
