At this point in time, when you see ANY job add in Korea claiming that 2,200,000 won per month (as a salary) is equal to $2000................................it is false and very misleading.
Keep an eye out.

Just so newbies know. . .
You should check the won against your own currency, especially if you're not American.
The people on here are not economists and as much as they'd like to make a thread about it every two seconds, nobody actually knows what's going to happen with the major currencies in the future. Yes, of course you can make predictions but nobody knows for sure.
And if they did, they sure as shit wouldn't be posting about it on Dave's ESL cafe.
So newbies, keep an eye out for panic inducing posts. Yes, the exchange rate is pretty awful if you're changing won to American dollars but there are more things to take into consideration than the exchange rate when contemplating the Big Move to Korea. |

Yes, more things to take into consideration.
1. The fact that schools are not increasing salaries (for the most part).
2. The increase in the cost of living. Korea is not exactly cheap.
3. Employers posting false and misleading information in their advertisments.
Seeing as how a post focusing on this was already deleted today by the mods, it is important that newbies know the rate.
And yes, they should compare it to their own currencies.
But, I would say that most of the job adds compare the salary here to U.S. dollars.
No, people can't predict the future. But, the current state of things is enough to catch the attention of many.................whether or not they are considered to be "panic inducing posts".

Hey, I'm all for discouraging new ESL teachers coming to Korea. After all, it gives me more opportunities.
But, you have to remember that there are LOTS of people who come here and do not send a penny home. I've NEVER wired money home. In fact, now that the won is so cheap, I'm wiring money here! It's awesome. The won buys just as much crap in Korea as it did when it was stronger than the dollar. So, why not take advantage? Time to upgrade the 46" LCD television with a 56".
Korea (outside of Seoul) is a cheap place to live. At least it's cheap compared to most major US cities.
Anyway, stay out of Korea! The won is crap. lol. |

Money isn't everything.
Many of us come here for the opportunity to dine on fine haute cuisine, to gaze on the elegant architectural panorama of modern Korean cities, to engage the local intellectuals in a witty exchange of ideas in their finely tuned English, to establish warm interpersonal relationships with the warm, welcoming Korean populace, to experience the respect and helpfulness of our Korean coworkers, and to enjoy the relaxed and comfortable working environment that comes from enlightened Korean management techniques. |

i've been contemplating teaching in seoul,
but like all of you, i've been keeping up w/ the exchange rate drama.
thanks for posting this thread. it would be a shame for somebody to
come here under false pretenses, expecting a better exchange rate.
i've noticed these misleading ads myself, and felt disgusted with them.
if this is the way koreans do business, they're certainly no better than us americans. and that's pretty low.
schools that post misleading ads should be blacklisted. |

It is worth more than that in Australian dollars... 2.2 mil is about 2.5 AU$ |
