Hi,
I was just told today that I have an English Winter Camp and I have to choose a textbook by the end of the day...
I tried looking on the search function for tips on English textbooks...but I could not find any.
I was wondering if any of you can tell me some quality conversational textbooks for grade 6,7, and 8 or tell me a site that reviews many English textbooks.
Majority of their English levels are high beginner.
Thanks |

did they tell you that you need a textbook for your camp? usually my camps have a different theme for each day with lessons from different sources and a bunch of games/activities/independent work for them to do in between.
anyways, here's an online text a few people have recommended on here:

Book 2
Book 1
I've got both of these two. Book 1 is good for MS or low level HS. Book 2 is better for the higher end of HS.
You can pick up both in Kyobo for about 10,000. Good value and format. There's about 50 2-page lesson topics, each with pictures and vocabulary plus other simple activities. For higher level students, there's also dialogues at the back, but I've never used them. Each topic/lesson should last around an hour.
They've proven to be lifesavers for when I've had to pull out a lesson at short notice. |

The running dictation activities in this book are awesome. So is the cause and effect activity. The writers name is Andrew Finch. he's got tons of stuff available online. |

My Winter Camp will follow some of the themed project lessons that people have been talking about on here for the last few weeks (the Superhero lesson, movie day etc - I have no imagination of my own). The Tell Me More book looks to have some good activities suitable for when I teach grades 5 and 6. I also need to teach grades 3 and 4 and I am worried that the textbook activities will be a little tough for them. I don't teach them normally so I have no idea as to their level.
Does anybody teach grades 3 and 4? What do you think to the activities in Tell Me More? Do you have any other suggestions? |

Maybe book 2, but book 1 isn't. The topics are themed around ideas such as colours, clothes, family etc. I'd expect university students would demand something a bit more mature than that. The vocabulary is also far too rudimentary for twenty somethings who, and by the time they reach university, would have had a minimum of 6-years of English language instruction and should have moved on from these kind of topics.
Have a look next time you're in a bookstore anyway. Only you really know what your students are capable of.
Alternatively, take a look at this, which is also available in Koybo. There's also a book 1, but I don't have it. My 1st grade MS girls have enjoyed this as it has loads of colour pictures and storyboards etc as well as simple function and grammar exercises. This is another one that isn't structured in a linear fashion so you can just dip into and take sections out that you think you're students will enjoy. I paid about 12,000 for it I think. |
