Has anyone stayed in or know about any of the hostel/ guesthouses in central Seoul? They all seem to have fairly positive comments posted on their bookings sites - and who knows? They may well be true but would like to check it out in this forum. In particular want to know whats clean, in good condition with clean facilities. Have to book soon so help appreciated

I once stayed at one that was about a 5 minute walk from Anguk Station. I think it might be now called Banana Backpackers found at this link:

http://www.seoulbackpackers.com/

I stayed there years ago so I'm sure it's changed a bit, but it was fine when I stayed there.

Stay away from Lee and No. Guesthouse near Hongdae, I found bedbugs under the mattress and a few on the floor. Bedbugs are easily spread and can hide very easily in your luggage.
Bedbugs are very common as many people backpacking in SE Asia will pick them up without knowing and transport them to other hostels.
Not to scare you but make sure you check before you pay up.

wind road and wind flower in the daehangno area are TERRIBLE! filthy, poorly maintained, rude staff, and quite expensive considering. last year my friend insisted on staying there instead of w/ my fiance and i. he didn't want to "intrude." i immediately insisted he leave upon seeing the conditions there. i've stayed in hostels all over asia and europe, but never seen anything as disappointing.

Here is a link for the YMCA in Seoul:
http://www.ymca.or.kr/hotel/eng/index_eng.html

It's the only hostel name I know of, but it isn't a hostel it's a hotel.

Here's a link for hostel booking online: http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/south-korea/seoul/

Lonely Planet lists 40 places to stay in Seoul including homestays. They also have a list for Busan. Checkout : http://hotels.lonelyplanet.com/ Burt from the names listed they could be a bit pricey.

Here's a list of hostels around the country : http://www.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/AC/AC_EN_4_1_1.jsp?recommCid=&areaCode=&category=B02010600&menuId=3383&byclass=&gotoPage=2&#selectBox

I stayed a couple of times at the Holiday in Korea Hostel. It is near the Jongno 3 station. Also, the hostel staff are friendly enough.
