MUMBAI, India Teams of heavily armed gunmen stormed luxury hotels, a popular tourist attraction and a crowded train station in at least seven attacks in India's financial capital, killing at least 78 people and wounding at least 200, officials said Thursday. The gunmen were specifically targeting Britons and Americans and a top police official said the gunmen are holding hostages at two luxury hotels, the Taj Mahal and Oberoi hotels.

This just in: seven or eight of the bastards have been captured alive, and they're likely in the hands of Indian police. Guantanamo will seem like a wishful paradise for these guys within a few hours.

No confirmed casualty list yet? They were targeting foreigners or just looking for foreigners while on the rampage?

Sounds to me like retaliation for the Indian navy messing with the Somali pirates.

Quote:
One of the most interesting aspects of the pirate drama involves India. In a dramatic move, an Indian frigate, INS Tabar, stole the limelight by sinking a Somali pirate mother ship off the coast of Oman. Tabar had previously driven off other Somali buccaneers.

The Indian Navy sank a Thai fishing boat they thought was a "mother" ship.

No.

One building was apartments of Israeli expats where Jewish religious meetings were publicly held; Americans and Brits attacked elsewhere in the city.

So this was spurred by anti-Isreali/anti-American sentiment (with Britain being lumped in)?

(I obviously haven't seen much beyond initial reports)

The last I heard 78 dead, 185 wounded.

I'm glad they got some of these guys alive. Hopefully the Indian Government can get some answers.

Britain isn't being lumped in...they've done som bad in the past and continue to do so. Although that's not an excuse for this, I just had to say that.

Me thinks it's an islamic radical thing, not Kashmir related but probably driven by Kashmiri/Pakistani radical types.

India's cities are easy target. Large, choatic, little security.

I can't guess how that's going to change now.

One source described it as India's 9-11....referencing watching the Taj Mahal Palace hotel burn down.

Well, this certainly won't be good for Indian/Pakistani relations or muslims in India in general.

I was in the Taj Mahal restaurant in 1995. It had a great buffet breakfast.
