I'm being audited by the Canadian government, and the forms I gave them showing the taxes I payed in Korea weren't official enough. This was all my Korean boss gave me (hand written pay stubs), and I have since found out that you need to ask for a copy of the official tax forms from your employers.
I called the Korean Tax office (NTS) and found out that I have to be there in Korea to pick up the tax forms, and since I'm not, that I have to have someone there pick them up in my place with Power of Attorney forms.
I have no idea how to get these forms and so far asking and looking around hasn't helped. I have a friend still working in Korea, who I'm thinking of asking to do this for me, but I need the forms that the NTS will accept.
Any help is appreciated.
p.s.
The Canadian government sucks... after working in Korea I was a good citizen and reported the money I made. I had to pay them $4400 in taxes, and now they have taken the $1500 in taxes I payed to the Korean government while working there, and have charged me interest for not paying that to the CND gov't right away. Why would I lie about paying taxes in Korea when I was totally up front about the salary I made there in the first place?
I'm thousands of dollars in debt from University, and here the CND gov't is taking thousands more from me that I don't have.
For anyone thinking about going to Korea do these things:
1. Start your contract mid year - if you split you foreign income up into two tax years you pay less taxes... I was stupid and have income from Jan07-Dec07 making me pay the most I possible would have to.
2. Even better, get rid of all your connections to Canada, and tell everyone you are going to Korea and never coming back. That way when you do come back you can claim non-residency and won't have to pay taxes at all.
3. If you do make my first two mistakes, then make sure you pick up every official form while you are in Korea, just in case the CND gov't decides to audit you like they did me. |
