| hi. I'm off to laos next week and i'm wondering what currency to take. I know laos kip is not an option but last time i went i took a mixture of thai baht and U.S dollars. now, with the exchange rate being so rubbish, i was wondering what to take. will i get more bang for my buck if i only take won, or is taking dollars the best bet? |

International travel usually requires you purchase US dollars since it's the universal currency that everything else is based on unless you already have US, Euros, Yen, or Pound Sterling; major currencies. The Won is a minor currency and SE Asians love perfect US dollar currency so you need to buy dollars. It's ideal to have many 1's, 5's, 10's, and 20's. It's tough to get many perfect 1's and 5's if not buying in America as this will cause a small dollar currency run on the bank who won't like it, will question you, and then only allow you to purchase 100 to 200 small dollar notes, but you can try more than once at different locations.
You can take Baht to Laos, but it will still require dollars to get it. If you manage to buy baht with won, you probably will do even worse on the exchange rate. Buy dollars in Korea at a bank or currency exchange in the airport. The poor won exchange rate is why the vacation is costing about 30% more this year. |

DO NOT TAKE WON OUT OF KOREA. Most places won't even look at them much less exchange them.
Buy your dollars here (ya it sucks) and then convert them to the local currency when you arrive (you will get a great rate at the moment).

Agreed.
And even if you do manage to find a place that will change won, you'll get a very bad rate. I took my first trip to the Philippines back when there were 56 pisos per 1000 won. The currency dealers would only give me 45. |
