With all of the elements of a perfect ending coming together, Suwon captured their fourth K-League title
on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over FC Seoul in the K-League championship. The game's MVP Edu
was responsible for both goals, one he netted himself and the other coming from a Song Jong Gug penalty
kick that he earned. With nearly 40,000 people on hand in the wintry conditions, it was the perfect enviroment
for the perfect ending.
Suwon dominated most of the match that pitted the two best teams in Korea and were rewarded just 11 minutes
into the first half with a strike from Edu off of a bad clearance from a Seoul defender. "I couldn't believe how much
room I had to shoot, it came naturally to do what I did," said Edu after recieving the MVP award.
Just minutes later Seoul equalized on a penalty given when Suwon goalie Lee Woon Jae extended his hands on a
Seoul striker in the box. Jung Jo Gook took the penalty and then celebrated in front of the Suwon fans instead
of going back to celebrate with his team. He later came to regret that after Suwon's next goal. When Edu went
down in the box and the referee pointed to the spot in the 38th minute, it sent Suwon fans into the raptures.
Song Jong Gug gave Suwon the lead after the ball was saved and he knocked in his rebound. The Suwon players
then iimmated the goal celebration of one of the Seoul players directly in front of the Seoul fans.
With 90 minutes drawing to a close, in almost poetic conditions, snow began to fall as the GrandBleu began
to celebrate the championship. The surreal scene was enough to put tears in most eyes and was definitely
enough to put a perfectending on a perfect season. |
