I've been working this part-time gig set up by my uni and it's only once a week. But every day I work there, without fail, I have chills and bodyaches when I get home. At first I thought is was just this one junior high school student, a boy. And, if any of you have ever worked at a junior high it seems like those kids are always running around under-dressed in cold ass weather.
But it happens every time I work there. Even when I don't see that kid. The rest of the staff seem OK. I kinda wonder if it is something in their water cooler that they've all become immune to.
It feels like it's a flu creeping on so I flush my system with vitamin C and sleep on my ondol to sweat it out. When I wake up I feel fine, but dehydrated as hell from all the sweating the night before.
So, am I hypochondriac or what? Anybody else get something like this?

I've learned to
1) not drink from the Koreans' "water purifier"
- have you ever seen the thing serviced?
and
2) never touch a student
and
3) instruct my older students to use a tissue to cover their mouths' when they sneeze or cough during class time
- keep a box of kleenex on the table you teach at
-----------------------------
Be careful. You don't want to get mad Korean disease. Caucasians are more suseptible to it than the asians and africans.... |

my highschoolers run around sneezing and coughing on each other! on purpose!!!
though nothing the time a kid ran up to a sleeping student and cut a loud fart right in front of his nose..
I almost hit the floor I was laughing so hard... especially when the kid woke up and made that funny "what's that stink" face. |

Yes, yes, YES! I work at a school two days a week and I am absolutely, 100 percent sure is made out of something poisonous.
After about thirty to forty minutes in the classrooms, which are on the second level, I start to feel dizzy and nauseated. Some days it's barely noticable, some days it's worse than others and some days it's so bad I have to sit down and teach. (and it's not the water because I bring my own bottled water in). I think there's either something poisonous in the air or something poisonous in the building. I don't know if it's related or not but this school also has an alarmingly large percentage of retarded children and children with learning disabilities.
I also feel like I'm being a hypochondriac ESPECIALLY when I tried mentioning it to the other teachers who looked at me like this
and started muttering things about me being crazy. |

I've had a cold for the past month- but much more so in the past week.
Kids come to school sick, I don't really get sick days (well, I don't want to waste them on a cold-and I only see kids once per week).
I'm eating lots of vitamin C, taking Airborne, and I've almost used up my Nyquil supply... grr... |

sick building syndrome

mold, poor ventilation, chemicals in building material, microbial or mite contamination of HVAC systems, there are plenty of possibilities |

Hmm, interesting. Although I think, as the article puts it, symptoms like;
| Quote: |
| Personality changes such as rage/weeping/paranoia/depression |
could equally be attributed to having to work with my psychotic co-teacher.
No, seriously, thank you for that. It's a great article to show the other teachers and prove that I'm not crazy. |

A bit yes (that sweating on the ondol thing is a very odd thing to be doing.)
It is actually rare to catch a viral infection by breathing it in. Viruses are almost always transmitted by physical contact and then rubbing eyes/mouth etc.
Just don' touch your students.
Oh, and see a shrink too. |

| Bring a big 1 liter bottle of water to work and drink only that for the day. See how you feel after class is over. |

Nah, I think some candle-light vigils and destruction of public property would be a much better use of my time. |

I used to get the exact same symptoms at my school and figured it was just from the smokestacks across town, but then I zeroed in on the harsh bathroom chemical that the young assistant was using to clean the floor. I spoke with him and he said he got the same symptoms also. We agreed to use something less debilitating. Good luck! |

You lost me there - please do explain - how you first suspected a boy (16y.o.) is making you sick?
