Since I will want to be playing a few DVDs after the final exams this week, I was wondering what sort of other activities teachers usually include with the DVDs to make it seem like a real lesson and not a complete waste of time.

Waste of time? You mean students talking/sleeping/goofing off during a movie while the Korean co-teacher is in the teachers' room sleeping and the FT is surfing the internet posting on Dave's--and all of this going on every class for two weeks--is a waste of time? Someone tell this to my principal!

I have 5 classes a week that are aimed at sharing "western culture." Movies are actually a great way to get culture across, images tell a thousand words etc etc. I just started doing this, but what I do is introduce a bit of american culture, such as cowboys/westerns, do a 10-15 min ppp on cowboys, westerns, cowboy fashion in america, famous actors, standard plot lines, etc etc. Then I show a western movie for about 30-40 minutes, tellng the students what to look for.

No reason you can't do this with christmas, other cultural topics I've thought of doing are (this is for boys high school):

gangs/inner city life
police/traffic laws
dating/living alone/moving out at 18
neighborhoods
mafia
surfing/skating

Telling the kids you're going to show a movie, but prepping them with a presentioin/short lecture works much better than showing the movie first and trying an activity, in terms of student interest. Once the movie starts, it's best to run it till end of class.

I pause the movie throughout and ask the students questions. When the movie is finished...I give them (a) a listening test....(b) a reading comprehension test...(c) a written test about the characters and different events that happened in the movie. (d) I have also put my students into groups....with the task of writing up and then giving oral presentations.

Yes they enjoy when I show a movie (about once/twice a year). However it is clear from the outset that it's not just 'free time'......and they will be servely tested at the end of the movie.

One activity that I like to do is to have them watch part of a scene, and then only listen to the end. In groups the students can try to work out what is going on, and what actions people are making to go along with they heard. Have the groups act out the scene while you play the sound, then they can watch it to see how close they were.
