I have already picked up my Visa and now my recruiter is telling me to arrive sometime early next week. I emailed her previously asking if the school would understand if I pushed my start date to after Christmas so I could see my friends and family before I go. She told me the school said it understands my desire but that they want me to be able to get to know the kids before Winter Break.

I lost my grandfather this year and I know it would mean a lot to my grandmother if I hung around for Christmas. Also, many of my friends will be in town, and I don't know when I will see them again otherwise.

Is it reasonable to insist on pushing back my start date? If so, how should I go about it? Will the school hold a major grudge against me?

If you've already signed a contract with a specific start date, you really need to be here for that date.

If that's before Christmas, then I'm afraid that's just an unfortunate mistake on your part.

If your start date is after Christmas but the school wants you early for 'training', then you're within your rights to refuse.

My sympathies on your loss.

No, not without a good reason! Unexpected emergencies are one thing, but the reasons you give for wanting to push back your start date are things you knew about (or should have foreseen) before signing the contract.

Yeah, you guys are right. I was planning on leaving sooner but all this business with the visa pushed me so close to Christmas that now I feel bad leaving my friends and family behind. But you gotta do what you gotta do, and it would be very unprofessional to ask more than once. I guess I just needed some third parties to remind me of what I already knew.

Can anyone recommend some good cameras so I could at least make a cheesy holiday video for my older relatives who will turn Christmas into a very special episode of Opera when I am gone?

The others are right, if you agreed to a specific date in your contract then you should stick to it.

There is one advantage to leaving before this Christmas....it means that next Christmas (2009) you'll be returing home and you won't have to spend it in Korea.

Well put, really. Korea's about relationship. You don't want to start off on the wrong foot because Koreans have memories like elephants. Start out not on top, but even and don't worry about the small sheet. It'll take you far. Trust me. I know.

They do if they benefit. If they don't benefit or if a sticky situation will cause them to lose face somehow, they revert to their more-common selective memory. If you need to remind your SK boss about the end-of-contract benefits you're entitled to and want to ensure you get those, you may find you have to remind him over and over and over. If one of your students complained in one of your classes eight months ago about some stupid shit that doesn't matter for jack, he'll make sure you know he remembers that well.

OP, if I were you I'd ask my family to celebrate Christmas early. Nothing too big or fancy, just you and the immediate family. Exchange gifts, take pictures, drink eggnog, sing carols, whatever. Do it before you leave.

Yes, I agree. But it depends on how you are. People don't fk with people that have no business being fkd with. But, true. You gotta make it known in the beginning who they're dealing with. They, however, overstep boundaires. I'm not disagreeing with you.

It sounds like they didn't get the paperwork taken care of for the start date you requested/agreed to, or the start date they set was unrealistic in the first place. If that is the case, I would just let them know that you will be there when you get there. You agreed to a date, they didn't make it happen, therefore, you aren't the one breaking what you agreed to. You've had to sit around with your life on hold waiting for them, asking them to let you through the holiday isn't asking too much. After all, you aren't making much more than your would if you stayed home and worked at Wal-Mart. If you already have your visa, they have invested too much in you to back out now.

Beware, however, that they may be a bit mad at you and your relationship may never get great.

Understood, Ying, but my post was more of a community share, not something aimed at anyone specifically.
