Going to spend a few days in Dubai. Anyone have recommendations for what to see or do there?

Spend a bucket of money from what I hear.

My bud went snowboarding there, he said that was pretty trippy.

I guess they have nice beachs too.

- First, take an abra (small wooden boat) across the creek, costs less than a dollar. Great way to get an orientation.

- Visit the gold souk, clothes/electronic shops in Deira. Always some interesting things to see: clothes are bigger sizes than you would ever find in Dongdaemun! Shoes, especially sandals, are good value. You can buy perfume, saffron and similar things at a good price.

- Food, especially from the sub continent, is decent. If you like paneer/roti/curry type dishes you'll be set. But there are many choices. I especially liked the Iranian restaurant in Al Nasser square. Really reccommended (look for the the Russian jewellery shops on the other side of the square).

- Visit a mosque. It is an interesting experience if you have never been to one before and worth doing, especially at prayer time. (You can just sit on the side and watch, no need to take part).

- All the textile/fabric shops on what I would call the "non-Deira" side of the creek. Interesting maze of alley ways and little, interesting, shops, full of merchants selling tons of fabric. There is also a museum and a few nice book/variety shops over there.

- Burj al arab/beachside. The obligatory photo op. Worth doing.

- The taxi system in Dubai is actually good. They all use the meter (free trip if they don't!) and it is not outrageous in price. Especially if you are visiting some of the outer malls and whatnot. Forget the local bus system.

- If you get bored, there are buses that go to Oman (less than 1 day travel) at inexpensive prices.

- My big/only complaint about Dubai is the shocking lack of low to mid range hotel accommodation. It is nudging US $200 per night just to get the simplest most basic of hotel rooms. I understand there is a hostel, but it is quite a way out of town, so to speak.

Meet some Russian ladies or some Indian lady Belly dancers.
Swiss Hotel has three nightclubs, One Russian, One Indian, and one Phillipino.
