When did countries start using "brand" slogans (Korea - Sparkling, Soul of Asia, Amazing Thailand, etc)? Is this a relatively new phenomenon, or have I just been living in a cave too long?

I always thought branding slogans were for consumer goods: The Uncola, The Real Thing, Just Do it, Be All You Can Be, etc. When did it begin here? What was Korea's first brand slogan? "Korea - Used to be Twice as Big," or how about "Korea - About Half Way Between Japan and China," or Korea - Only Four Hours From Thailand," or Korea - Land of Four Seasons."

It all got me to thinking somewhat, just what is the brand slogan for the USA? "Visit America the Beautiful," or America, Land of Milk and Honey," or America - Land of the Free and Home of the Brave." Does American even have a brand slogan for that matter?

Does the American government pay PR/Marketing firms huge amounts of money to create these deceptive, silly sounding, sugar coated slogans like Korea does? I hope not.

I suppose it is all about increasing your market share, but it seems to me that if you have a superior product to begin with then you don't need a brand slogan.

So, fellow expats (Canucks, Poms, Kiwis, Aussies, Afrikaners, and any others reading this), what branding slogan does your country use, if any?

The common brand for Britain is "Visit Britain". Easy enough.

As mentioned in another thread, I'm doing a unit on this in one of my classes. After showing great spots for several SE Asian countries, we dissected the "Korea Sparkling" ad and examined some of the major flaws.

The kids agreed, but were a bit put off by my criticisms and asked me to show them the tourism video for the US. I couldn't find a single one.

There are plenty for individual cities like "This is New York City" but I couldn't find a single one to show them for the nation as a whole.

I think only individual states have slogans.

Here's a list:

My home province has a billion dollar tourism industry that went by (ugh):

'Super, Natural' British Columbia
then it became (my fav):
Beautiful British Columbia
nowadays it's (groan):
B.C., The Best Place on Earth

'Beautiful British Columbia'

Vancouver Island used to have the slogan -
'Follow the birds to Vancouver Island.'
But they dropped this when the ferries stopped throwing garbage overboard, and the seagulls stopped following them.
