told I'm getting it , next maybe , told they need a mystery number..

The main sticking point , apparently, is a 13 digit number with the seventh number in the series having to be [the number 7 or 8]. AND, surprisingly my bank here in Korea [Shinhan Bank] has something to do with this number - so says the tax people.

The seventh number in the series [from the 13 digit number] either a 7 or an 8 is reserved for foreigners only- so says the tax people.

My current ARC number is 13 digits with the seventh digit in the series being [the number 5]- NOT a number 7 or 8.

I have had the SAME BANK ACCOUNT for more than eight years with SHINHAN BANK. My ARC number then was yymmdd-100-1403. It clearly is not this number. Perhaps, the tax people want to go further back in time when I first arrived in '97 - I had a bank account then but I don't remember the bank name or my bank account number from then.

Just two years ago, I went to the pension office in Incheon[Guwol-dong]
to apply for my pension refund. At that time, I did not have to have any
13 digit number with the seventh digit beginning with a 7 or 8. I had no problem getting my pension refund at that time.

Just perhaps, newbies who came last year and stayed only qualify. Their ARC number would in all likelihood have a number 7 or 8 as the seventh digit. Those of us who have been here far longer well... don't qualify.

Who bloody knows?

They're looking for your "dummy" RRN (resident registration number).

If you opened your bank account without an ARC, or perhaps in your case because you opened your account with an ARC under the old numbering system, your bank (should have) assigned you a "dummy" RRN based on your passport number. The format is the same as an ARC number, but the seventh digit is a 7 or 8. ARC numbers will usually have a 5 as the seventh digit.

I've run into problems with this before. The easiest thing to do is open a new bank account using your ARCthat way the registration number on the account will match your current registration number. Failing that, you'll have to go to the bank and try to make them understand what you need.

Maybe that's why I haven't gotten mine yet.
