this is beginning to SERIOUSLY get on my nerves.

I like to watch stuff off SNL and other stuff that may catch my interest and view it online, but NBC blocks viewing anything from South Korea

it tells me that the video isn't "available from my location".

WTF does THAT mean?
and WHY?

what's "special" about South Korea?

anyone know of a way around this?

Most likely you can't view it outside of North America, not just Korea. A lot of companies do this. Not sure why though...

how about trying to access the site thru a proxy server? so it can't really tell where you're "from"?

btw.. for a month or two BEFORE the election I was able to see SNL vids off the official SNL site.

no longer.

I think it has soemthing to do with legal issues. Maybe not now, but in the future things could get way out of hand with broadcasters from one country broadcasting at will to people in another country. We might think of it as freedom of the internet or whatever, but for the "host" country there are lots of problems.

I encountered a site that said "we are currently negotiating with the country where you reside" ..." we hope to be able to broadcast to you soon" or soemthing to that effect.

Why simply put - Money.

Studios spend money to produce a show. They sell it to TV stations to play. They do not want other countries to view it for free when the can buy it. Minor point this is Korea they used to rip shows off of AFKN then play them on another station thus cheating studios out of fees.

Lets see also it can save on bandwidth when you do not have to provide video to the whole world rather just one corner. A nicetuned system could easily handle 10,000 requests verses 200,000 requests worldwide. And some places could easily find paying for that 200000 requests not worth it. I mean if you build a system that will give you 90 percent of the audience/customers you want by simply cutting 95 percent of the rest of the market down.

Another reason is LAW. Simply put they are not allowed to have it played outside a certain area. But this is usually I think is with sports events.

Well simply put your best bet to viewing is to look into PROXY servers.
Maybe even TOR servers could work.

Here's something I found out randomly yesterday...

We can't watch Guns n Roses music videos on Youtube from South Korea..

I was looking for November Rain, couldn't find it on Youtube, found it through Google, and was told that it's unavailable in this country...

Probably because your preferences are not set to Korea. That, or they haven't flagged the videos you saw.

why would GNR stuff be blocked on youtube in korea?
what possible explanation ?"??

and re NBC etc

I understand a network trying to sell their shows. (comedys, dramas, etc) that's become a big business.

But the stuff I'm talking about like SNL and Leno and Conan, which are all offered, even in complete episode format online - this stuff will never be sold overseas to anyone because those shows can only appeal to Americans (and perhaps Canadians).

so I don't get it.

at least I can get MSNBC vids without any problems. Ditto for Meet the Press.

I couldn't watch NBC from Canada either. This was over 1 1/2 years ago so it might have changed since then.

I've noticed that some Youtube videos are saying that it can't be watched from Korea, but they show the video anyways. My country preference is Canada and not Korea. I guess things are going to change with youtube soon.

I've been using tor (prixoxy/vidalia setup) with no trouble at all for watching nbc.com. I did have some trouble at first with the link that vidalia was setting up, but manually adjusting it to to start/terminate in N.A., and it ran with no trouble. YouTube is the same way.

I doubt Guns n Roses is blocking it..Why would Korea block it?

I've had the same problem watching several videos online...They all say "This video is not available in your country."

yeah, they just don't show outside of north america. pain in the ass. BUT i get around it with a vpn server. specifically hotspotshield. its quick to download and not hard to install. i will warn you, sometimes the video will be choppy and won't play right, but it works it out eventually. for me, thats better than nothing sometimes. also, it'll put an ad bar at the top of your screen, i just ignore it. and occasionally you'll try to go to one site, and you'll just be rerouted to the "anchor" page, which is basically an ad thing. its really annoying so i only turn on the shield when i'm ready to watch something from hulu etc. it sounds like its really bad when described that way, but i just wanted you to be prepared. and its one of these things or not watching it at all, so i prefer this.

also, this is one of the more recent awesome snl digital shorts:)
