Recently, my girlfriend bought me a shiny black and grey dress shirt that I could wear to work. I find the shiny grey suits that a lot of businessmen wear laughable, but the shirt she gave me wasn't too bad. Anyways, as I was ironing the shirt this morning, smoke started to rise and after I pulled the iron off, I saw two holes in the shirt. The iron melted right through, as if the shirt was made of plastic. What the hell are these shirts made of?

how hot was the iron? i would suggest taking most dress shirts to a dry cleaner, or using very very low heat, as they may have some kind of satin-like material in them.

and i just outed myself as a metrosexual

I dunno. The same thing happened to a pair of pants I bought here. Not holes, but a bunch of smooth, shiny patches all over.

My luggage got stolen before I came to korea and I had to buy all new clothes here. I am wearing a cardboard watch, a rubber belt, and a plastic shirt with a nylon, drawstring tie...needless to say: I stay away from open flames.

I doubt that would have helped. These weren't small holes, and they left a melted plastic kind of residue on my iron.

Ok, turn the heat down, and put something that you know is cotton over the material. Honestly, it's not that hard.

The latter is particularly good advice, since it sounds like you're not wearing any pants.

What did you think it was made of? Do you know many naturally shiny materials?

Satiny materials are always the lowest possible heat you can use.

If you'd rather be safe than sorry, I use a thin towel or a pillowcase as a buffer between the iron and the article of clothing being ironed, so it isn't a direct heat source.
