|
|
Okay. So todays my birthday. I went to On The Border COEX with my family. I am from Texas. Been trying various western restaurants during my latest stay here of 5 months. Usually I leave wishing I'd eaten kimbob and kept my money. My 2 cents is that I had a great meal. I was for once glad I spent the money (or at least my wife spent the money) and can't wait to go back. I've had better in Texas, but for Korea, the meal was excellent. Much better than expected. I lived in the midwest for 5 years before coming here and it beats anything I found in the NE, CO, SD, WY area.
I've eaten in several okay Tex-mex places here, as well as US food, Middle Eastern, Indian and such. Always a let-down.
I don't think you can get any better in Korea. It was an hour where I felt like I was back home. |

On the Border is, so far, the ONLY "mexican" place that can manage to not wrap up shit in a tortilla and call it a taco. Every other place I've tried has been either disgusting or has had terrible service with mediocre food. |

Here's the lowdown on Mexican/TexMex in Korea:
Choi's Tacos in Sinchon: Cheap and good, esp. for the price
Dos Tacos (in Hongdae and Gangnam): Good
Taco Amigo in Itaewon: Ok
The other Mex places in Itaewon (including Pancho's): Not good (or so the reviews on this board claim, I've never eaten there based on the awful reviews)
Tomatilla at Jonggak station: Ok-Good, depends on what you get
On The Border at Sinchon and at Coex: The best Mexican/TexMex in Seoul. Expensive? Yes. USA quality? Yes. While other places have a limited menu, OTB goes all out with a huge variety of food and tequilas. And with unlimited free chips and salsa, I often split an entree with my girlfriend. An entree runs 13-25. Divide by 2 and you are still full and paying the same price as you would at any other Mexican place in Korea while getting better quality food. |

On the Border's lunch specials are a bit on the small side, but okay. |

On the Border is totally worth it.
I didn't even know it existed in Korea until recently. I was walking around in Sinchon with my girlfriend, hungry, expecting her to be taking me to some ramyeon or crappy K-Italian place.
We turned the corner and low and behold, On the Border! I was ecstatic. Being from Texas, I miss Tex-mex food immensely when I'm in Korea. The decor is great, the food is awesome, and the service is even better than back home. It's miles better than any other Mexican joint in Korea.
My girlfriend even printed off some coupons at a PC Bang and we got a free appetizer. I left satisfied. |

A friend of mine was deeply involved in setting up the first On the Border store in Korea. I got him in trouble by reposting some problems he confided in me on this site, such as their difficulty in securing limes.
By the way, there's a taco place overlooking Hongdae Playground, but it's really not worth it compared to On the Border. On the Border is too expensive to warrant weekly visits, but a once-in-a-while trip will satisfy your craving. |

Dude, yes!
Just grab a cocfun next time you are in the sinchon area or in coex. This month on the border generously offers us three coupons. Check 'em out! |

Yes, yes, and yes. It's not true, authentic "mexican" cuisine, but that doesn't mean it doesn't rock. It's Tex-Mex (hence the name, "On the Border"), and those of us from north America that are used to that kind of prep and portions will be in hog heaven.
I'm there at least twice a month.
Choi's is decent, but it depends on who is doing the cooking. If the big man is on the grill, you can expect a treat but I've been there when some pimply-faced college kids are running the show and it was definitely sub-par. |

Your list should say say TexMex in Seoul.
There's a place in Songtan, Line 1, La Casa. It's authentic Mexican food (they have 3 or 4 Mexican cooks/chefs) and it's not too expensive. 9000 won for 3 tacos and a soda, some chips and salsa. They have a decent menu: tacos, quesadilla, fajita's, some good beans and Mexican rice.
OP - living in the Midwest, you think that On The Border is better? I haven't tried it yet, but being from Omaha (which has a HUGE hispanic population), I'd say the places in South O are pretty fantastic... I've got some high expectations now my friend... |

My dining in Nebraska was on the panhandle. Didn't ever make it to Omaha. |

I've been to On the Border a few times, and always enjoyed my meal. There's a delicious veggie/vegan option, too! However, last time I was shocked to find that their guacamole was one part avocado and many parts lettuce. lettuce? yes, lettuce. I understand that avocados are expensive, but surely if you're a Mexican place, that should be the one thing you don't mess up! |

I don't know where you're from, but where i'm from thats pretty damn expensive.
By the way I'm from the southwest, and the midwest had nothing even close to authentic Mexican food. |

9000 won = $6.45
if you won't pay $6.50 for three tacos, chips, salsa and a soda then go back to Mexico!
it's not super cheap, but it sure isn't too expensive unless you're a total tightwad |
