We live next to a Korean Hasook (boarding house). My PS3 continually picks up random computers that have allowed sharing of their files. Sometimes I rummage through the audio files to see if there are any interesting songs on their lists. Today, a new one popped up complete with pornographic photos of a guy with either a girlfriend or a hooker -- she didn't look like girlfriend material, anyway. He even had a scan of his passport saved in his photos area, along with several photos of himself and his other recent "adventures" in Korea.

In other words -- turn off your file sharing.

Well said.

Korea definitely lives up to its reputation of "most wired" country in the world, as least from my view. It seems that some people have gotten so comfortable with the constant stream of wireless around them that they forget to, as the Wu-Tang Clan would say, "Protect ya neck."

I forgot to mention that the guy is Chinese. He's probably a Chinese student at our school. Shocked

Haha. Sorry. After the initial shock of coming across it, I'm going to opt to respect the guy's privacy and leave it alone.

Why did the guy put such sensitive material in a shared directory?
Maybe he wanted people to see it.

Well, that's just it... you can start the sharing process and forget you have it on. He's also using some program called Orb to do it. I only know that because the Orb icon logo shows up on my PS3's screen as a shared computer to access.

Usually, when you share your computer using media player, you can select who you want to share with. It is, in my opinion, too easy for someone who doesn't understand what they're doing, to click to allow someone accidentally. He could also have accidentally checked the box to share the computer with everyone automatically.

File sharing with Windows Media Player has not been issue-free. Some people play with it, can't get it to work all of the time, become frustrated, and just leave it. In the process, they may later find that the computer is actually sharing live, and others are able to get to it, while the 2nd computer they own can't. The user assumes sharing doesn't work, and just leaves it wide-open for others to see.

Also adding insult to injury, Microsoft has updated WM player in such a way that an update can turn it all off again, with different ways needed to turn it back on -- further confusing people.

One more issue -- 3rd party programs (this Orb program could be one) often share wide-open. At least TVersity seems to do that with mine, so I got rid of it. I know a fair amount about computers, and couldn't figure out how to secure my computer from others with TVersity, so it's pretty confusing!
