I saw some brochures of salsa dancing in Hamilton Hotel in Itaewon. I'm quite sure they're holding it somewhere in Itaewon. |

If not in the Hamilton go down the alley behind it near Bricx and all of those bars and there is a place there that has lessons. I believe it's across from Bricx and down a small stairwell. |

I take lessons at You Can Dance. They teach salsa and swing. It's near the 3 Alleys Pub. Nice bunch of people there and we go clubbing after class. It's pretty addictive if you're into that sort of thing. There's several salsa clubs in Seoul though I haven't checked them all out yet. |

I haven't heard good things about their swing. They aren't swing dancers who teach there, they're ballroom dancers or something. So you don't get actual swing dancing, but only the ballroom version of swing.
Unfortunately, since I did/taught swing dancing in Montreal before I ever went to Korea, I never had to take lessons there and don't know where I'd go for that. Where in Seoul are you? I'll ask my friends where is good for lessons near there.
If you need to know where to go out and swing dance, though, I know a ton of the swing dance bars in Seoul. I hear there are even more now than when I left. I'll be back in Feb and am willing to help anyone learn swing dancing, though. ^^ |

Im not taking swing dance at the studio so I cant comment on it. I just take salsa. Before that, I got a basic background in salsa, cha cha and bachata back home in New York. Kinda glad I did because New York instructors I find to be tougher and of course, we have tons of options available there. They also teach a lot about shines, styling and spinning techniques. I can't find any classes here devoted to that in English and the studio doesn't teach me much of that. I go to this studio for the social aspect and I like going out to Latin clubs for practice. I've also learned a couple of new dances here going clubbing. I want to pick up other dances along the way like swing and jive but again, there's not that many options here. I'd be interested in learning when you come to Seoul. I'm not ready to go to any swing dance clubs until I have a basic knowledge of it. To answer your question, I'm in Dobong-gu. |

Oop, I was not really trying to bash the whole dance school. I just heard that the swing they taught was a ballroom like swing. There's just so little authentic swing dancing that's known to people that a lot of people wouldn't know, really. I'm sure the teachers are talented dancers and good teachers, I just wanted to point out that for someone looking for authentic swing they'll probably not find it there.
Not everyone is looking for the authentic, though. Ballroom swing is more "cleaned up" and simplified a bit, and it's not such a street dance like lindyhop is.
Although I was originally asking the OP where they were, I'd be happy to help anyone who wants to learn swing (lindyhop/charleston/etc) learn it. |
