Three questions

1) What is the obsession with using less convenient mics and recording systems than exist in the rest of the world? I see interviewers and speakers using a black box with a skinny mic sticking out of the top when the sound boom from most cameras is sufficient in most cases. I also see that performers LOOOOVE having a mic taped to their face. WTF?

2) I understand patient privacy issues in the west all too well but it seems that broadcasters go over the top on fuzzing out the most benign shit like faces of vast numbers of people in a crowd or minor medical procedures. Is privacy such an issue here? Are they afraid the viewer will faint at the sight of a doctor palpating a patient?

3) Are we to believe ANY interview that has numerous cuts and edits? Regardless of the topic I can't help but change the channel when I see an edit/twitch/skip in the footage.

Sounds like you're describing a shotgun mic, which, incidentally, is what is sticking out of the cameras in the first place. They're just holding it and sticking a logo on it.

Most TV stations back home, when I was in TV, had the reporters use a mic plus the shotgun mic. They could mix as they decided to in post (editing).

I think they are using lapel mics with wireless receivers. It makes no sense. Wireless mics like those are for attaching to people. If youre going to use a mic directly recording to the camera just use a wire. It's almost guaranteed not to have problems.

So why dont they use the lapel mics on those comedy shows instead of weird ones taped to their faces. I also am very confused by this.

Thanks Bass.

Last night I was downing some beers at Soyuki Bar when a movie was playing. It was a newer US war movie. Christian Slater got his head cut off and the head rolled across the ground. They blurred the severed section but not the whole head. f'n laughable. We were hystarical over this. I'm surprized they did not put one of those black identity bars over his eyes.
