I lived and worked in Taiwan previously. Very much enjoyed it. Beautiful scenery, good transportation, easier to find nice housing, and nice people. However, it was more difficult to save money, only because a teacher must pay for everything themselves - housingwise most of the time. If you don't have debt then it can be an excellent place to live and work. Cheaps flights to many countries from there. Taichung is a very nice city. That Saturday morning class in the offer they sent you seems a little excessive though. Myself and friends there usually only worked Monday to Friday. Another thing about Taiwan that was nice too, is that a teacher wasn't tied to one school only with the VISA so you could accept as much private work as you wanted.

The job offer is not the best. The pay is only 55,000nt. They do give you and apartment... but... It's only between 5000 and 15000 to get an apartment there, anyway (15k gets you a pretty nice big place; better than just about anything a school in Korea would put you up in). You can go to Taiwan and just find a job that pays 65,000nt$ pretty easily.

The working hours suck, too... and working Saturdays...

The area is not that close to Taichung or Changhua. I know because I rode my bike through there several times. So, you'll be looking at a long scooter drive if you want to get to any place where you would be likely to meet people you would want to be friends with. I would bet thats why they market the job this way.. they can't get people who are already there and know about Taiwan.

In general, as I've said on this board before, living in Taiwan is great fun -- if you live in a city like Taichung or Taipei -- but working there totally sucks much much worse than working in Korea any day of the week blindfolded no contest... you can go to the Taiwan board on the international forum to see why.

I agree with the other posters that living in Taiwan is cool. I loved it there. It's much better than Korea.

But the job doesn't pay much and it seems that you will be living in the sticks. Usually living in the sticks in Taiwan means everyone speaks Taiwanese - a hard language to learn as there is no written form. So you'd have to learn Mandarin and Taiwanese to get around. Also it could be very boring.

Taichung is known to be a really cool artsy city so living close by would be good.

I suggest finding a better job and living in a big city like Taichung or Taipei. Forget Korea.

Do not take until you are sure they will not burn you on vacation!

Man they are going to burn you hard on vacation...

I worked in a small country town at two Public Elementary sc00ls. Yes the children were much more sweet and obedient than Korean children - but they were rather poor too - which may explain the respect for education... But, they so burned me on vacation! What kind of Con Job is the wording on that!?

Paid Chinese New Year break! COOL

Of course you do not work on their New Year - the school is locked up tight! However you can expect to work on Christmas and all your semester breaks too. It was sooooo lame I did an English camp in the winter and summer breaks - Used most of my vacation days during winter to combine with Chinese New Year in Palau - but during both breaks when I had NO Camps and there were NO STUDENTS or CLASSES the Great Basses fishhead principles required me to com in sit and do NOTHING! I was like what are you thinking?! They were like "well the county gives us money and you must be in school" "read a book or something" SOOOOOOO DUMMMMMB if that happened to me in any Korean School I would slap them silly with a plate of Spaghetti with With American Meatballs... ok ok no I wouldn't but I would most definitely complain....

At any rate I bet your school may well do that type of thing too- now as to you taking an EPIK job I would guess they will NOT do that - but of course it is all an unknown.... It is hard to say I would contact the school and ask them straight up about the vacation...

Best way to get a good job in Taiwan is to go there first. That job offer is low pay and long hours. Believe me you dont want to teach little kids 6 days a week.

Thank you everyone for your nice replies. I haven't taught EPIK either but some teachers say they are happy with it. If I can just fly to Taiwan, I rather go there on my own at a later date.

Tiawan, not having a written language, wow that must be insane.

Thanks again for everyones answers. You have helped me a lot.

Wait until you hear the sound of it at 5am in the morning when you are suffering from a hangover and the old people are "talking" (screaming) to each other across streets and alleys. IIIIeeesh. But it's a great language to swear in.
