At last a big name event is coming to Korea, but is it a good idea?
Korea has virtually no racing infrastructure so a new track has to be built.
The cost around 220 million US dollars
On top of that there is the licence fee to be paid to the F! organization.
The deal is to have races for 7 years.
If there are no more races then you have a 220 million dollar white elephant.
Unlike US and Europen tracks that are used all year round, this track apart from the grand prix will be desolate most of the year.
During an F1 meet to entertain crowds other races are held such a V8's, Ferraris, Porshes etc. What can Korea offer scooter and Matiz races.
The track is to be built 250kms from Seoul, there is very liitle infrastructure such as Hotels and Restaurants.
Will Koreans attend an event that doesn't have any Koreans in it?
Shanghai is looking at cancelling their event because of poor ticket sales.
The whole exercise is going to cost a lot of money and will lose a huge amount, just to fuel the grandiose hub bub/we need to be noticed/we need to get tourists/ mentality.
Glad its not my money going down the toilet.

It seems like they are jumping ahead of themselves a bit here. Perhaps they should get themselves involved in some smaller races and start developing their racing industry.

Racing Hyundai Clicks to F-1 is a hell of a jump.

I'd like to see the local race community getting more local support though. Especially if they did something radical like racing electric cars, or holding eco races (challenges).

For a country that focuses so much on its production of cars they really seem to have no real local interest in racing.

Yeah, the track's in Yeongam, a county in the middle of nowhere in Jeollanam-do.

Racing is such a pointless "sport" anyway. Have people drive in circles a few hundred times, burning gasoline for no reason.

Do you need a CDC on an F-1?

Bravo 2MB. I wonder how much kickbacks Hyundai is getting to prop up Ecclestone`s crumbling empire.

Who said they were getting a race in 2010? The Koreans?

I guess when England loses their GP, it has to go somewhere.

TV is more important than crowds, that's all that matters to F1

After the recent news of teams going belly-up in F1 and I believe Honda pulling out, F1 might just be a bunch of ajoshis in their stock Hyundais by then.

But how cool would that be? You could fuel both driver and car with the same Soju! Razz

Well, if they do get the race here, you can bet there'll be weirdness.

Anytime Korea gets something big or someone big, it usually happens. Reminds me of when Lance Armstrong came here to be a spokesperson for the Tour de Korea two years ago.

He showed up in the middle of his retirement with his Trek mountainbike, obviously to promote the brand. And the Korean racers got angry, saying that he showed up to race them with an MTB...He's disrespectful, yada yada yada. Oh yeah, and he wasn't racing...didn't come to race.... But they made him go to the starting line of the pro road race and take off with the bunch. Can you imagine? Lance Armstrong in sneakers, baggy shorts, Livestrong t-shirt...taking off on a mountainbike with these international pro racers and Korean racers (with serious chips on their shoulders). It was a freakshow. Lance clearly wasn't impressed. He got swarmed by everyone blowing by him right from the gun. He pulled off of the course once it was safe. Ridiculous.

Maybe they'll open the track to motorbikes once the F1 circus goes away. How freakin' cool would that be? To putt around on my motorbike on an F1 track!
