Today my wonderful computer decided to go into a transient state and tell me to type the words I saw in a window that looked suspiciously legitimate. It said "type the words as you see them "_____________" then it would count down. It basically locked the system until I typed what it wanted me to type.
The thing that bugs me is... well 2 fold. First I have a legitimate copy of Windows XP running on my computer. Second it keeps telling me it's for XP pro and I have XP home.
What can I do? I ran my virus program and it found one virus that I deleted. The screen didn't come up until hours later. I'm running the Microsoft full service scaner as I type this. I just really think it's wierd that something for XP Pro would be coming up for my XP home computer and since I have a legit copy why would it be testing me to see if I'm a bot trying to hack into the system by asking me to type words as I see them. |

Try loading a free month of Kaspersky Anti-Virus. I've been testing loads of them, and may end up buying this one. Another good one is Antivir, but the free version doesn't kill spyware, pops windows up all over, and is prohibitively expensive in Euro to buy full. I was also getting blue screens from Antivir.
Currently, Norton 360 is said to be pretty decent. You want one with good proactive protection, as that's what seems to be killing people the most these days. I used Avast for years, but don't use it on my home computers now, because my dad's computer got nailed using the Home version (and it's currently getting rebuilt) due to the same malware that killed my computer. Avast found it, but only after a scan. It was still allowed to do its dirty thing in the background and kill my office computer and my father's (two months later). Avast wasn't cleaning it off. Had the same problem with NOD32 not cleaning stuff off, as well. Kaspersky has been the best for me so far.
Get Kaspersky Internet Security here: http://www.kaspersky.com/kis_latest_versions
If you do buy it, you can find far better online deals than what you'll pay to buy direct from them. |

Avira doesn't kill malware unless you pay for it. Gave me blue screens, and pop-ups too. Wish it would have been more free-friendly. They pay version is the best out there, but it's also the most expensive... like 50 or 60 Euro. |
