Unfortunately this is the second foreign English teacher injured in a fire.
There is a Mokpo, South Korea group on facebook that will presumably be undated regularly.
This was posted on the group yesterday(Sunday) and is the most recent info:
Nerine, the South African girl who got injured in the fire is still in the ICU. She has shown no real improvement and some other complications have developed.
The medical costs are rising and it will be difficult for the parents to cover everything. They want to give the best medical treatment for her but as we all know this can be expensive. If you feel like making a donation to help them then please contact me here on facebook. It is possible for me to collect donations from people living in Mokpo and then pass it on to the family. If you live in another city or it is not possible to meet with me then give me time until tomorrow to get the relevant banking details where you can donate money.

A terrible thing to happen at any time of year, but especially over the Christmas season.
Chances are she won't be on private medical aid in South Africa since she's out of the country so if she goes home she'll be in a state hospital!!
Join the group on facebook guys and make a small donation. An amount as small as one beer from each of us, whether South African or not, will make a huge difference. This kind of thing can financially cripple an entire family. |

Latest news is they want to fly her to Seoul in this week for better care and confirmation that's she is really brain dead. The test can only be done in Seoul. Even more expenses.
According to Korean law they are allowed to switch off the machines on Saturday. |

OP, why so little personal info given about this person and her plight? Not one personal picture? Who is she and why did she come to Korea? If you want people to give money, you need to give more personal information.
I'm VERY disappointed about how you and the family of the victim have handled the entire situation. many people want to help your friend, but more information is needed.

Wouldn't it be a tad presumptuous to post personal information of a girl whose been in a coma on a public forum? |

Donations to Nicko's account so far:
Email received from Nerines close friend:
He said so far 600 000 \ have been raised. (The donations in his account.)
Her father phoned me yesterday night. Her organs are not functioning properly anymore and he asked me to go to Mokpo this weekend.
They are going through a very tough time I could here it in his voice. They are emotionally drained!!
I will be in Mokpo @ 6am. I will visit her and then let you all know again. I don't like to make assumptions but I think this weekend is going to be crucial!

You don't seem to understand the sequence of events.
After the story of the SA woman (who was burned in the fire) was in the Korean news, many of us begged for info and the friends and family posted nothing. We only wanted to help them get the word out to as many teachers as possible. Then, a relatively new poster named traveller started making posts asking for money to be sent to a private bank account. When questions were asked about the name of the woman or how the money would be used or if the woman had health insurance, the friends, including traveller, initially refused to provide any information, and reacted harshly.
That's why many people asked questions- just to get info- but it took a lot of prodding to get these people to FINALLY start a facebook group with basic information about the woman.
Now, the issue is resolved because information was provided for those who may want to donate. |

It's definately not limited to South Africans only. Anyone can contribute.

Information was NEVER refused. The family and friends of Nerine were so focused on her that no one thought to make a facebook group.
As i have said before...I have never met the girl. I read that thread on Daves, realised that not much info was out there and tracked her friends down to get the info out. ANYONE on Daves could have taken that initiative. However the result has now been for certain people on Daves to start a mud-filling movement, unfortunately.
Since I started the facebook group having never met her or her family, I have been contacted by Bill Kapoun's family, a recruiter in SA and South Korea who would like to contribute, as well as an online newspaper. I have also been in touch with an SA radio station, newspaper, Business magazine and top Capetonian investment fund firm who has a high level of involvement with Cape Town social programmes, not only hoping to get financial aid for them but also to attempt to make sure all South Africans who come to Korea have additional insurance when they come over.
Wylies99 rather than spending your time insulting me and her family on Daves, as well as sending me a PM to ridicule the effort I've made for her post your phone number and we can discuss your issues in person. Nerine is fighting for her life and by the looks of things, all you are contributing are your own personal issues. I hope for your sake that you and your family never face a similar situation. I'm done responding to you on this site. Be man enough to post your contact number that way the family you have insulted can contact you directly.
To everyone who has contributed or joined the group to help with events, thank you very much. I will not be updating Daves, since the facebook group will have the latest info and I don't have to read posts that annoy me. By the sounds of things, the decision on whether or not to switch off her machines will be made on Monday. It couldn't be sooner than that due to Korean law.

I just received this from a friend who has been with Nerine Mokpo
Hi everyone
Nerine passed away at 11:00 this morning.(Korean time) Her heart failed and the doctors could not get it going again. The memorial service will be Tuesday morning in Mokpo. I just wanted the parents to tell the family first and not for family members to read it on facebook. That's why I'm only informing everyone now.
Thanks again for all the prayers and to everyone who donated money. There will still be costs involved so I will keep on taking donations for the next week and then we can formally stop the process on this page. You all have been great and we cannot thank you enough.
I think it is a very good idea to start a fund to deal with this kind of situation in the future, should it arise again (which I hope and pray is never). |

Received on the facebook group:
I would just like to thank all the group members for the donations, we are going to put it good use and really needed it. The total amount that were given is 800 000won. This will cover the expenses. The rest of the money will be put in a fund for future use as a Foreigner Accident Fund. The details of the fund will be given as soon as we created it. I also what to thank all the members for praying, we really apreciate it! From the bottom of our hearts, as a family, we want to thank you for the support and encouragement! I know that, even as we don't understand God's will we know that He knows the best!
Much Love
The Viljoen Family |
