All I know is I have an ATI X300 pci express card that has pissed me off for months. It's dying. I've had it 2 years, and it's had various symptoms.
First was screen brightness was fading and getting shadowy, then random freezes for a few seconds.
Now, I actually got a blue screen caused by it this morning which said the the driver was in constant load cycle which had freaked out the card. At last some info!
I tried reinstalling the drivers from the ATI disk and that made things worse. Whereas before I could stay in windows because the ATI software would use it's fallback settings, I think the reinstall process couldn't get completed because of the hardware problem. So suddenly the PC would not get past the Windows driver load process without the monitor dying.
I could get into Safe Mode only.
I took the card out, cleaned the PC inside and out with compressed air and a vac. Reseated the card. No luck.
I used my Ghost image, and here I am. But the ATI software has again told me that it has had a major hardware issue and has saved the day. I have also had another blue screen.
I like computers a lot.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I HATE THIS POS CARD
SO, I need a basic card (and probably not ATI please) that has S video out. I don't need it for any gaming as I have the 360.
Can you recommend a card please? I would like to order on line. I can fit it myself. |

I seriously doubt that it's ATI that's caused the problems here. It could be either the age of your card, or the company that built it. ATI provides the chips; it's up to the board manufacturer to put them in a card that works. I had similar problems with my GF2 MX and 440MX long ago. Needed to boot it twice to get past the POST (Bios check) and the GF2 just died when it was 6mths old.
I bought a Radeon 9100 and didn't have any more issues.
My next computer had a GF6800 and currently a GF8600 and again, no issues. |

I see.
I was wondering about that. I saw so many "geforce" cards on line, and was thinking that maybe only the chips were made by one company and the rest by others.
thanks for the info. |

Yea, most cards here are built by Korean companies. Quality is a little variable. Having said that, most work fine, though they lack the nice features that a good American card will have. Since you want a basic card, I'd either wait till you see one here or go spend 50,000 in Yongsan. You don't need to spend any more. |

So as far as drivers go, are they standard? Do I have to go to the Nvidia site for example to update drivers, or do I have to go to that partcular Korean manufacturers site? |

The drivers are made by ATI and NVidia. They are unified, meaning that the one 50MB download will support the whole range of chips. Always visit the site to get the latest official drivers. |
