Why is there distortion when I try to watch videos from my computer on my TV?

I just bought a new LCD TV, and I wanted to watch stuff from my computer on it, so I got the cable that runs from my laptop to the 'PC' outlet on the TV. The display looks fine, but when I go to watch a movie (in VLC player) there are horizontal lines of distortion every few seconds. Not enough to be unbearable, but enough to be highly annoying....not to mention disappointing, given the excitement over the new TV.

This doesn't happen when I watch a DVD, play XBox, watch TV, etc.

I'm hoping there's an easy solution to this, but I've never tried this before, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks in advance.
