Hey guys - looking to put together a multi-purpose (gaming/media) PC. I've been using laptops for the last few years and lost touch with most desktop hardware. Any thoughts and advice will be appreciated.

What I (am pretty sure I) want...

Intel C2D E8400 3GHz: 221,000 - 245,000 (or should I go quad and if so what's the best way to go?) - also, what cooler do you suggest?
Motherboard (?????)
Graphics - ATI 4850 (x2?) or 4870 - much performance/price difference?
PSU - I guess at least 600W?
RAM - 4 gig - brand or generic?
HDD - I guess I would like a decent amount of storage - any suggestion for brand/model?

Anything I've missed? It's been a LONG time since I've done this...

Will be hooked up to (probably) a Samsung T240HD

TIA and cheers!

Looks pretty decent.
I would go with a P35 or P45 chipset-based motherboard by either Asus or Gigabyte (both popular/ widely available in Korea).

The e8400 should serve you well. The dual cores overclock better than the quads, so unless you are going to be using some heavy-duty multi-threaded apps, the dual core should be great.

As for a cooler... if you are not overclocking, the stock one is fine. If you are planning on overclocking, I see that Arctic Cooling products are becoming more available in Korea these days, and typically are better performers than the Zalman coolers. Arctic Cooling Freezer Extreme recommended.

For gaming at high resolutions (you mentioned a 24" monitor) best go with the 4870 if its in the budget, and you like to crank up the eye candy in games. An overclocked 4850 performs about the same as a stock 4870.

For the ram, generic Samsung PC6400 2x2gig is totally fine, and will overclock decently if you go that route.

For hard disks, samsung are fine. 640 gig seems like a pretty common size lately, grab 2 if you want.
