I think I've got several. What did you pay for getting a cavity filled in Seoul, just so I know what I'm getting myself into? Thanks. |

Find a dentist that will fill with amalgum (covered partially under medical insurance). If they refuse, and want to use only gold or expensive white material, walk out -- they're just trying to make more money off of you. |

I thought amalgam fillings were bad for you because of the mercury.
Don't go to Seoul National Uni Dental Hospital: the service is good but the fees a lot pricier than other places that are just as good. |

my dentists back home stopped using amalgam years and years ago- at least 8 years ago.....they said the white material is better material and i would much rather have white on my teeth then ugly metal....
.....and before anyone tries to point out that they are just doing this to charge me more money- i don't pay for my healthcare back home. it is completely free. whatever insurance or coverage i have there (someone must be being paid something) wouldn't allow it if it was just to gouge the insurance company!
i'll never get metal again- i still have a few metal fillings left that are really old and they'll get replaced with white when the time comes. it can't possibly be that much more money- now that i have to pay part of my health costs here.... |

Generally the non metal fillings are only about 25 -30,000 won more. Not that much more expensive. Getting a cavity fixed here without insurance runs me about 70,000 and my dentist is probably expensive. |

I agree that the fees are more. Much more. But you will have the best service and English communication in the country.
I'd like to hear some real prices and procedures quoted about cavities.
Anyone? |

I had ALL my cavities done here, and I mean the ones I had in the past 20 some years. He replaced all the metal with something else. He said it was has hard as the tooth itself, but not as strong as gold.
I had all my teeth done, and it was covered under insurance, so I paid around 7,000 per tooth. |

In Thailand, they cost about $20 to $30 per filling. I had my fillings replaced in Thailand since it was easy to find really good service from a dentist who speaks English. Thailand is just more equipped for medical tourism and catering to foreigners. If you're going, it's something to consider.
Polonius, that sounds good. Was that in Seoul? I wonder if that typical can be had in any town in Korea? Since having my white front fillings replaced a year ago, I'm wanting my old amalgam fillings replaced with white ones. |

There is a lot of misinformation on the web about this. When combined with other metals as an alloy, they are safe (as is the case with amalgam fillings).
See here: http://www.mydentistusa.com/cosmetic-dentistry-blog/2008/11/amalgam-fillings-bad-not-so-says-ada.html
Their advice is linked to a study, which you can actually read. Sites which say they're bad are almost never linked to any form of study, and often include words like "holistic", which can equate to catering to the quirky quasi-religious health nerd crowd who are paranoid about everything. |

My wife had a cavitiy filled with insurance in Gyeongsan for 7,000. We were happy with the service. |

Yeah, in Seoul, but I am sure that is normal practice here, as it was covered partly by insurance. I doubt a dentist would work on a patient for 40 minutes for 7,000 won. As others have mentioned, he tried to sell me the gold. That was a no go. |

It's hard to argue that white looks alot better, however. |

I wonder if that is/was the standard Natl. Health Insurance program? |

It does. I have a few white ones, but what bothers me is that they are a lot more sensitive to pressure, and sometimes even sweets bleeding through. If I bite something sweet, it's possible to feel it (at least it was early on). |
