Do any banks allow you to open accounts without an ARC?
My friend is coming over to study but on a tourist visa to start with. Can she open a bank account with just her passport? |

Woori Bank did it for me, second day in Korea.
My boss was with me though, you may need a Korean reference. Phone the English Woori help line and ask. |

| I got one at Citibank. You just need to have a passport to open the account. If you want to get an ATM card you will need to provide a Korean contact name and phone number. |

Did you just get a bankbook then? Can you withdraw money at the ATM with that? Or at the counter? |

Yeah you can do it with your passport. But there are limits to things she can do. For example, you cannot get a phone with a passport made bank account. It has to be an ARC bank account. |

| I'm not sure. I just gave her the name and number of my recruiter or a co.teacher and she gave me the ATM card. I only made the account so I could get my airfare reimbursed early. After I got my ARC I made an account at KB bank. |

Yep works fine for money deposits into the account.
The only hassles I had were when i needed to verify anything using my account such as the phone. Oh and if you want to set up an automatic pay system, you need to have an ARC made account. |
