PostPosted: Sun Dec 21, 2008 5:13 am    Post subject: Winter Vacation holidays under EPIK Reply with quote

Hi,
I'm an EPIK (public school) teacher and am wondering something about holiday time. I'm a newbie and been here about 4 months now, and I have "Winter Camp" to teach during the vacations.

I found out a couple weeks ago I only have Xmas Day, January 1, and January 26-27 (lunar new year) off, then the school term [they said] starts again on February 2. (I get all the Saturdays and Sundays off in between obviously).

On top of these regular holidays, I only get my '7 working days in Winter' to take off (as per contract).

Is this a raw deal or is this common? I find out many PS teachers have more time off than this, and I'm starting to feel like I'm getting exploited here or something! I don't get paid extra for the camp either.

Please give me your honest opinion.

Sounds right....you get your contracted 7 days then thats what you get. Youre not entitled to more. In your contract it states you may be required to work camps for no extra pay. Read through it carefully...

as for other people getting more time off, well theyre just lucky. either they dont need to teach camps and go to school or maybe theyve been here a bit longer and negotiated things.

Either way, you need to work what theyve said from the looks of it, and complaining wont make any difference.....itll only screw it up for others.

I would suggest complaining about it to the POE. Let them know it's unacceptable that some schools give more time off.

I would suggest NOT doing this. What's it going to accomplish? Are you suddenly going to get more vacation time? No. Are the teachers who get more vacation likely to lose that extra benefit? Yes. By bitching about your vacation, you cause other teachers to lose their extra time off. If your school give you the 7 days off per your contract, you really have nothing to complain about.

7 days isn't as bad as it sounds. Take them late in Jan because then they will fall around solalr or whatever it is and you will get 12 odd days in a row.

Don't complain. It's in our contracts, just take it like a normal person would.

the only things that complaining about this will do is get other people's extra vacation taken away and you'll be made to seat-warm all afternoon as well. just be happy that you'll be getting afternoons off

Don't know about that. There's some tough competition out there for that honor.
