My school has told me that I have to teach a winter camp at another school for two weeks.

My recruiters came to me today with a contract for the camp and some immigration forms. They have to make an application with immigration to get permission for me to work at the other school.

They told me I will have to pay them 70,000 Won for this application. Plus, I will have to go to a photo shop to get passport photos taken to go with the application. That will cost me another 15,000 Won or so.

Why should I have to pay that much money for a two week camp that THEY are telling me I have to do? Granted, they are going to pay me 24,000 Won an hour on top of my regular salary for this camp...but still.

I told them if they want me to do the camp, they will have to pay for the application fees. They were not happy about that at all, and kept telling me "but look at how much extra money you will be making!"

If it was something I was given a choice on, then maybe they'd have more of a case. But this is something they're telling me I have to do. What employer tells you to do something and then charges you 85 bucks to do it?

What do you guys think?

. Simply tell them, they pay. No two ways about it.

That sounds like BS to me. I've worked at 3 external camps, each time with my school's blessing. On every each occasion I've had to go to immigration to apply for "change/addition of workplace permit". It costs W60,000, but then again immigration changes the rules, and possibly the fees, so often that it might be legit.

Go to the immigration website: http://www.hikorea.go.kr/pt/CvlapplInfoDetailR_en.pt?cvlapplCd=127000000WC&locale=en&cvlapplGbSeq=

In case that link does not work you will need to sign up to the main website here:
http://www.hikorea.go.kr/pt/main_en.pt

Once you have signed up you can reserve an appointment, which is far preferable to rolling up to the immigration office and waiting in a lengthy queue.
Scroll over E-application then click File an application.
On the new page look about half way down for Sojourn>change addition of workplace permit.

Read the page then go to the bottom and click Reserve, and follow the process for downloading the form etc.

Seeing as they are requiring you to work at this camp I would definitely tell them to foot the bill. Cheeky buggers!

Curly girl, when you got permission from immigration, did they stamp your alien card or something like that?

My recruiter is planning to go to immigration for me and they haven't asked me for my alien card or anything. All they gave me was a form to fill out.

I'm definitely not giving them any money for this.

Yes immigration will print the additional workplace onto the back of your card. It may be the case that you don't need to go there in person, but immigration definitely needs your card. This is your proof of permission to work at an additional workplace. I smell something dodgy...

They asked me for my alien card and passport today. So I guess it is legit.

But they're still insisting that I pay for the immigration fees. My school is still telling me that I HAVE to do this camp. But they're not willing to pay the fees. The school that is running the camp has also refused to pay the fees. And I'm refusing to pay the fees.

So I don't know what's going to happen. They can't force me to do something and then make me pay to do it. That's ridiculous, don't you think?

Is this a Public School we're talking about? If so, the POE can tell you to work wherever they want and no other visa should be required if I remember correctly.

Exactly, no need to monkey around with immi in this case.
