Good point. I am curious to see what the final results will be.

Interesting how the website that shows this is...yeah Korean!

If there's one thing I've learned in Korea, it's how to spin everything to make yourself look better. They should make prospective public relations, advertising and marketing majors study here for a bit to see how it's done in such a subtle way.

				| That's interesting.
A Korean friend working for Emirates Air said she would never set foot on a Korean Air flight because of what she's heard from mechanics and cabin crew on board.

Apparently, at least until very recently, if a subordinate pointed out a possible malfunction or saftey concern that caused senior pilots or mechanics to spend time and effort checking out, they would be seriously reprimanded and/or have their pay docked to help cover the inspection costs if it didn't turn out to be a legit concern.

This led to most people just ignoring any problems they saw because they didn't want to "lose face" and piss off their precious "seniors" in the industry.

On a side note, she also said that Korean Air cabin crew girls will often not get the chance to enjoy any of the cool destinations they travel to, because the "senior" attendants are usually older and not keen on exploring/socializing and as "juniors" they have to bend over for them. A friend of hers had been to London a dozen times and had basically only been from the airport to the hotel and back, depsite having 2 or 3 days to check out the city each time.

Confucianism and the friendly skies just don't seem to match up.

I know a couple of flight attendants and what you said is partly true. On some layovers, they have team activities and have to follow what the seniors do. The last time I visited Hawaii, a friend was actually working on the flight a day after mine. She had 2 nights in Hawaii but couldn't meet up because they were doing team stuff.

With that said, I'd rather fly on Korean or Asiana over any of the U.S. carriers any day.

				| A bestselling book, Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell talks in depth about the Korean air situation (among many other topics). Specifically he looks at why there were so many Korean airline crashes and what changes had to be made in order to fix this situation.
The major issue was, as other posters have guessed, that pilots were given far too much respect and thus not told when they were making mistakes.

The book is a great read if you get the chance. They have a lot of (new) copies at What the Book.

cannot be more horribly mistaken. You must be confusing the two Koreas. the mainstream media here in SK always tries to expose even negligible concerns to create public fear which in turn boosts their ratings and sells papers. this is common among media in a vastly competitive capitalistic market like Korea.

				| anyway, the two Korean carriers are well worth their money in my opinion. I would fly with them over ANY (repeat, ANY) North American carrier. | |

				| Korean Air was very close to not being allowed to land at US airports 3-4 years ago, due to its terrible safety record. Interesting this. | |

				| Can we stop this thread? I hate flying as it is. I actually like Korean Air though; service was good, seating wasn't half bad.
But now that I know about all the safety problems I'm not sure I'll ever get on another airplane. It's gonna take forever to get home by boat.
