I've heard it is, but never have bought insurance. It might be wise should a health crisis situation happen. After going to SE Asia, I realize it's probably wise to have insurance that covers motorcycle accidents as you'll be on them with all your luggage so it's a bit precarious, but the drivers usually have excellent skill as they are raised on motorcycles. I was amazed at what they can do with a bike, but it is very risky. You might say, "I don't get on those." Fact is, sometimes you have no choice, because that may be the only kind of taxi around. Tuk Tuks in Bangkok are also a risky hazard, but optional. Traffic in Asian cities is a huge health hazard too that may require insurance at the hospital so they don't ask for more money than you're worth.

If you're traveling to a 3rd world country such as Cambodia where you have to be flown out for healthcare, then it's wise as they've warned that emergency airlift can cost $100,000. I took the risk of going without insurance, because I'm stupid is all I can say. It was a highly successful trip, but with many close calls or near misses.
