i teach gepik camps dec 28 - january 17. then i've got 2 weeks till school starts again.

my co teacher asked me what i wanted to do.

I could either go to school when nobody is there sit at my desk and stare at walls,

or i could burn 10 days of my vacation time and not show up to school.

i currently don't have any vacation plans, so should i just bank the vacation days till summer?

staring at walls sounds okay, since i don't have any thing else to do, and by summer, i'll prolly have plans, so the 20 vacatioon days would come in handy.

20 consecutive vacation days in the summer to get away sounds wonderful. I would download a bunch of movies this winter and just kill time in the office.

Are you sure you can bank them until summer?

Unless you have nothing less than: in writing from your principal, don't count on it!

I'm pretty sure you can take your 20 days in summer whether or not you have it in writing now. I'm surprised, however, that your school is not making your burn some vacation now so as to ensure they can squeeze a few weeks of camp out of you in the summer.

My advice is to bring this up to your school (unless you really want 20 days in the summer) about budgeting enough time for camp AND your vacation come summer. They're either unaware of the fact that you won't be able to work camp in the summer if you've stockpiled 20 days of vacation OR they're planning on attempting to jip you out of your vacation then.

As others have said, you better make your plans known to your VP and get any agreement in writing. Summer vacations are only 5 weeks long, so if you're planning to use your 20 days then, that means you can only teach 1 week of English camp, which your VP might not be too happy with.

Another thing to consider is whether or not you plan to renew your contract for next year. If you do, then you'll get two weeks of extra vacation in the summer, which means you'd only have to use 10 vacation days in order to get one month off. In that case, you may want to use the other 10 days during winter vacation.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe there's a form that all the Korean teachers fill out that we are eligible to fill out to that allows them (and us) to stay at home to 'lesson plan' during the holidays. If you'd rather not sit in an empty school by yourself, ask your co-teachers about this form that they submit to the office of education. That way you don't waste vacation days but you still get time off.

Don't just waste those vacation days, that's one of the great perks about this job, seeing new places and getting to travel - if your not traveling to some exotic locale, then you might as well come into work and do nothing all day long and get paid for it!

Get your handlers to get you the form that all the Korean teachers sign to do "lesson planning" at home. And if your principle gives you shit about taking all your vacation in the summer, shove the GEPIK contract down his throat. It's the one advantage we have in working a public school job!

Hell, if your ballsy enough I'd even not tell your VP until the summer, then he HAS to let you take the vacation days all off, otherwise he will be breaching the contract.

Yup. But it's 14 days including weekends and public holidays, so 10 working days at best. ^^

Anyone have a link to that form? I've seen a link on Dave's before, but the search function isn't so great here...
