I will be spending 4-5 days in Manila over the Christmas break.

How is the transportation within Manila?

Is it reasonable to stay in one place for the duration and just travel around the city to different areas?

Or should I spend 2/3 days in one district and change hotels to see a different part of the city?

Any suggestions for districts and/or lodging would also be appreciated.

Thanks

My advice is to stay at the Citystate hotel downtown near the US embassy or in Makati. You can also try the Durban street inn in Makati. Its close to a lot of shopping areas and pretty safe. Manila is crowded and congested. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g298450-d625701-Reviews-Durban_Street_Inn-Makati_National_Capital_Region_Luzon.html

I land in Manila at 1230 at night. Don't really want to hang around there. I Subic a good place to start as I like Casino's. I dont want to head off to Boracay until 9 days after I arrive to avoid the Christmas rush.

Is it safe at night? can I get a bus to Subic at night? Or should I just get a Hotel? Prepaid taxi? Bus? meter taxi?

The best thing to do is have a hotel pick you up at the airport. If they can't, then get a metered taxi and have security at airport write down the license number. I would not travel at night on any bus. Boracay might not be too bad this year. Their bookings were way low last month. I dont know if casinos offer a bus service from Manila?

I have always stayed at the airport when arriving that late. It really depends on what time your flight is in the morning. Here is one hotel I heard that is good near the airport.

Transportation is great in Manila. Taxis are cheap, just be careful, as Manila taxi drivers LOVE to rip off passengers, but at times you'll get honest ones. Just find out a somewhat reasonable price and add just a little bit more and solidly negotiate that price. The "METER, METER" thing won't work as they'll just drive you around a bit more until they get the price they want - guaranteed which will include them getting gas during your taxi ride.

Changing hotels is a great way to go. Manila can get real tiring, particularly in downtown Manila (Ermita/Malate). I've stayed in downtown Manila a half dozen times, but it is always draining. Great nightlife, but also a good number of homeless kids, their gambling parents looking for handouts, old aging ladyboys who think they actually look female when they certainly look anything but, and hustlers here and there wanting to see if they can hustle you.

Makati...most of the hotels that are reasonable priced are in a huge redlight area...tons of go-go bars all over the place...again the homeless kids, and girls trying to get you into the clubs, and general riff-raff around.

There are a few hotels that cost a bit more around the MALL area (in Makati)...there are some great upscale middle-class upper-class bars IN the mall...Greenbelt 3 in particular...if you have a bit more money (maybe $30-45 night even), there are a few in that area and more relaxing when you step out of the hotel...and just across from the mall and its shopping and nightlife options.

I stayed here for 13 days ($10-30). It's okay, if you're just in town for a day or two (close to the airport and MOA), but much more suitable lodging can be had at about $20 a day.

Villa Carolina Townhouse
MANILA ARRIVAL: Usually we advise our guests to take one of the Taxi / Transport services which is after immigration and customs and just outside the Ninoy Aquino International Airport ( NAIA ).
1. Outside of Ninoy Aquino International Airport Road( NAIA Road ),after the second set of sliding glass doors, look to the LEFT for a transport booth. We like Nissan Taxi. PAY ONLY P120 ( U$2+). Don't go RIGHT, they try to RENT you a car with driver P500++.
At the NISSAN Taxi Kiosk, give our address:
Villa Carolina Townhouse, Roxas Blvd. # 31, TAMBO, Paranque,Metro-Manila, Philippines. This is 10 minutes from all 3 airports and near Bayview Towers. Stress
