I have found alot of my answers on the FAQ. But I still dont know about a laptop. Can I find an "english" one in Korea cheap or will I be better off buying one before I leave? Thanks.

don't sweat it ... there are pc rooms on every street corner in seoul. my little neighborhood had about 10 24-hour pc bangs. it's dirt cheap ... about $1 an hour.
with that said, my friend bought a lap top that was totally in english. you will pay a little more in korea. i think there are adapters too, but i never bothered with it. there are several large electronics stores in seoul (techno mart -- gyeong bang station and yongsan electronic mart at yongsan station) -- both would probably have them, but it might take a little searching.
you might want music in your apartment as well -- buy a little disc man with small speakers. that's what i had and it worked fine. |

yes, the keyboard isn't a problem, but with a korean operating system it's tricky. i had a hell of a time w/ microsoft word, different commands, etc. and sometimes when you load a different language it screws things up. |

Bob V,
This is interesting.. as you're definetely one of the guys back home as of at this time.
Reminds me of when I visit home and trying to explain to people that computers, technology, cellphones, and everything else is about 1000 times better and more 'everywhere' than back home.
Damn I went back to San Francisco a few years ago (Internet Central of the World.. supposedly).. NOTHING THERE~! Come back to Korea and 1,000,000 internet cafes as opposed to about 5 in San Francisco. DSL and broadband and such is #1 in the world in Korea.. not sure what US is but its around 5 or 6 or something.. but well behind Korea, and other places.
Cellphones.. forgetaboutit!!! USA is one of the worst in the developed world in cellphones and cellphone technology (still haven't even go to the text messaging realm yet - let alone people actually owning cellphones). Europe has them beat by a long shot (despite being poor on the Internet).. and Asia far far surpassed both of them.
Cellphones in Asia make cellphones in the USA look archaic. You can take pictures and photographs on these cellphones - which you'll see constantly Korean girls taking pictures of themselves in any given public place. Not only that but nearly everyone here has a cellphone compared to just no one in the States.. |

Just helped my dad buy my mom a new "brick" handphone back in the USA for Christmas. The infrastructure hasn't changed as fast because people don't use handphones as much, and they don't need to. We drive everywhere, pay no "per minute" charges on regular phones, etc.
As far as the text messaging goes -- they want to charge as much as a call to do it, so why the heck would we? The capability is there, the USA people just don't want to pay for it. The USA is a really big country, and to upgrade the older antenna infrastructure costs mega $$$. That's part of the reason too. |
