Hello everyone,
Thanks in advance for any advice you can all give. I'll try to keep this post brief .
I'm looking to work on Jeju-do this fall through EPIK (even with the falling value of the won). I have a few questions about the island itself and also about the cost of living there.
-- For anyone living/who has lived on the island: impressions, how do you like it? I can handle very cold weather, love the beach/outdoor activities, like to go out but can do without it, and would be fine not traveling a ton, so long as there are things to do on Jeju-do. From the other posts about the island community that I've read on this forum, it seems like it's very tight-knit ... is this true?
-- What is the approximate amount spent on utilities in the summer/winter? Are food/clothing more expensive than on the mainland? If I get a EPIK job on Jeju, I will have $500 or so out of my salary of $1,500 that goes to paying loans back in the US. Will $1,000/month be enough to live modestly/have some fun/travel once or twice on?
-- If you don't recommend living on Jeju-do, what small city or town on mainland Korea would you recommend? Can I request a specific town through EPIK (I did not think I'd be able to do this)?
Thank you again! |

| through Epik you can request a specific province, area, or city. They are pretty cool with that. Jeju is quite competitive to get into. I was originally accepted for there, but lost my spot because of the length of time it took to get my CRC mailed back to me from the RCMP. I am off to Busan now. So get your stuff together fast because there is only like 11 spots or less and being "Korea's Hawaii" as they try to market it as, it is quite a popular spot. I have been told that the cost of living there can be a bit more than the mainland, but things like fruit and veggies are pretty inexpensive. Jeju has a great foreign community though. Go check out jejulife.net and the yahoo group rhymeswithjeju . they are both great little spots for asking questions and getting a sense of what life on the island is like. |
