This morning, my school received the info package about the upcoming GEPIK Workshop on December 17, 2008 (High School) & December 18, 2008 (Elementary School). I would like to share with everyone the main file, which is an overview & schedule of the event.
Note: according to the documents, the application deadline is indeed today. In order to confirm your spot, your school must send to the province your completed info as shown inthe sample in file #3 below.
My co-teacher gave me a too-brief overview of the primary document. It's my hope that a good Korean speaker on these forums would be so kind as to translate the specifics of the schedule and what we'll be learning.
I know there have been other threads on this subject, but it would be nice if we could gather all discussion of the event and how best to get there in this one place.
Here are the primary files received by my school in both HWP & converted DOC format:

I'd love to, but unfortunately, I can barely understand Korean. It would be great if a Korean speaker could take a look at the files and translate the workshop/activity section.
In any case, just tell your friend that it's neither important nor desirable for him/her to know what the schedule and activity plan is for the workshop.
If it were important, your friend would 1) have received these documents him/herself, 2) be able to read Korean, and 3) have more than 1 day's notice to RSVP. |

There is an English component to the information that is also available in the notices section of the GEPIK Website. That information indicates the time and place, and gives (presumably) detailed directions for getting there.
However, the information provided to schools in Korean actually outlines the schedule and activity plan, and perhaps other things that are currently opaque to me and others who can't read Korean. Is it vital for us to have this in advance? Not really. But for those of us for whom attendance is optional, it would have made it easier to decide whether or not to attend. Plus, knowing exactly what's in store in terms of activities (in addition to the Traditional Korean folk play) makes it easier to dress appropriately. |

Third Lecture- Getting accustomed to eating spicy food.
Fourth Lecture- How to endure leg cramps while sitting on the floor
- How too look busy during seatwarming on vacation
- How to bow propery.
Fifth Lecture- Doing the perfect open lesson.
- Setting up PPT you will only use once. |

And waiting for a Korean to tell you sometimes works, but usually you are expected to already know. Plus, hey why not actually use the language that the govt. spends so much money on? You know, encourage its use, value it, and see it as equal to the Korean language. |

Korussian must be thinking of wearing a Hanbok, because he/she can't be thinking of turning up to one of these things in high-powered business dress, I hope.
A sideshow in hicksville that I have been instructed to go to on that day has pottery and kimchi making. |

Here's the schedule, though with admittedly few details
10:30-11:00 arrival and registration
11:00-11:20 Opening Ceremony
11:30-12:20 Classroom management I
12:20-14:00 Lunch and fellowship activities
2:00-2:50 Classroom management II
3:00-3:30 GEPIK announcement
4:00-5:30 Culture in Korea
I went through the rest of the document in Google translator, and got very little out of it - just the usual vague statements about teacher training and model classes. Though, it did seem to suggest that we have travel budgets ("Native speakers of each school's travel budget projects expenditure"). Not that I'm going to try and argue with my school for 2,000 won... |

| Are all high school foreign teachers required to attend? I just asked my supervisor about this and he replied, "We did not apply for the training, so you are not going." I figured they would want to send me to training. |

My understanding is that, in practice, there's no such thing as "required to attend". At the end of the day, it's up to your school whether they feel like telling you about workshops like this, and whether they want you to go or not.
If they don't want you to go or don't care if you go, then they simply won't register you for these events in time. There are certainly no short term consequences to failing to attend, and, as far as I know, no long term consequences either in terms of renewing your contract, annual bonus, vacation time, etc.
Does your school want you to go to these conferences? They have no particular investment in your quality as a teacher, have no metrics in place to measure your success, and have no long-term goals for you beyond the end of your immediate contract.
From their perspective, I imagine, as long as their white-faced resume on a stick keeps dancing in front of classes, why invite more paperwork by sending you to conferences? |
