|
|
So I've heard some things about being able to buy laptops cheaper in Hongkong with their duty free in the airport, but have done some searching online and can't find anything consistent on it.
Basically I might be going through there in a few weeks, and was wondering a) how easy it is to get a new MacBook cheaper there than here (they're way expensive here at the moment) and b) how much cheaper it actually is.
If anyone's got any experience buying stuff duty free there on a layover please share the info.
Thanks much |

| Duty free isnt always the best deal and they dont always have the newest stock. You`ll have to contend with traditional Chinese OS possibly. You would need a UK style plug converter unless you can change the Mac one to the European style Korean plug. |

2.1 Ghz White Macbook in Hong Kong: $10,200 HKD = 1,322,832 KRW

in Korea: 1,580,000 KRW

Apple prices are pretty consistent with the prices on the Apple site within that country, as Apple does not let dealers stray far from those prices. Hong Kong is a duty free city, so buying in the airport doesn't make much of a difference. Years ago I bought my first iPod at one of the Mac shops on Stanley street in Central Hong Kong. They're pretty good there, and yeah, things are cheaper in Hong Kong. Also Hong Kong is more or less bilingual so you will still probably be able to get an English OS if buy one, especially at the airport. |

That's a great actual price comparison to see how worth it it is.
And of course with the OS it doesn't really matter so much with Macs, as they're all on the disk, so you just pick which you want. |

That's kinda what I heard. That it's better to get one in town than in the airport. I was just wondering if it's good enough of a deal to possible end up staying there for a night. The current layover schedule is only 2 hours, so definitely not enough time. |

| Lhama island has cheap guest houses and the boat goes straight from central. Nice place to stay for a night and check out central without having to pay for an expensive hotel in central. |
