Hi Everyone,
I am a new english teacher in Daegu and am the only foreign teacher at my school. I am wondering if there is anyone in the Daegu area who wants to hang out, maybe have a coffee, grab a bite to eat and chat? After my first pay I am gonna go to the Bearworld bar as I understand that where the foreigners hang out. Oh yeah, my number is 82-53-802-0109. Hope to talk to you soon! ,

Garth

Hi Garth,
Welcome to Daegu. I'm afraid I can't help you much with expat bars, but I can tell you that they exist, and over time you should be able to meet a lot of expats. I find that the best place to just people watch and get the groove of the local culture is the downtown area around Kyobo Books (The Kyobo building) and Seomun Market- to the west of downtown. You should be able to find lots to do here. Homeplus and Emart are the best places to go for your western needs, and what ever else you need. I find myself getting most of my stuff at Seomun, though. P.M. if you have any questions.

Garth,
I tried to phone you but the number was wrong. I don't know if you are still around but I'd love to go for coffee sometime.

I've been in Daegu for 4 months and found it..well...impossible to meet foreign people. I will admit I didn't search to the ends of the earth here...but I have gotten mixed responses to hellos and questions I have asked people.

Anyways, My names Wendy..I hope you haven't been too lonely..and I'm looking forward to hearing from you...

Respond to this message and then I'll send you my e-mail or phone number..
Take care and happy New Year
Wendy

I moved away from Daegu in February, so I won't call you. I lived in Jisan-dong, which is a sort of auxillary downtown, and there are quite a few waeguk-in living around there. It's the area anchored by Dong-A baekhwajeom (Beommul-dong), if you're taking a cab, and the 401, 402, and 407 buses all run there. There's a little Italian cafe (Piero della Francesco) behind the Dong-A with a Molinari coffeeshop adjacent to it where teachers hang out. On the other side of the department store is a bar called Tokyu House (cross the street from Dong-A, pass the Daegu Bank, walk about 300m up Jisan-no and it's the place with a parking lot and blue-white sign on the left), and further down, a bar called Morrison Bar that is occasionally lively.

The downtown hangouts change more often, and I usually went to Busan on weekends instead. To be honest, I didn't like Daegu very much. At least Busan's only about ninety minutes away.

By the way, if you're in Jisan-dong, the best restaurant in Daegu is just beyond the Tokyu House bar. It has a sign only in Korean for the one dish they serve - Andong jjimtalk. Look for the pictures of masks outside - it's a cozy little place with toasty ondol floor. The owner's name is Mr. Ma. He's a smiley 50-something guy with wispy hair who speaks some English and likes to pump foreign guests full of various alcoholic concoctions he keeps stashed away. I still miss the food there.
