Thanks for the blog. I am considering Jeju, although I don't yet know if it is an option. I am interviewing with EPIK right now. I hear that the pay is unreasonably lower in Jeju, that teachers are taking lesser pay just for the atmosphere. Is there an international clinic there? What is the population?

Lori, why did you post this in the General and Job discussion rooms, too?

Newbies, if you want to know about Jeju, 1)ask someone who has lived there for at least a year and 2) ask 1 or more people who left as well as 1 or more people who stayed,.. that way you can get a balanced opinion of the place.

They do pay cheaper because the cost of living is cheaper. If you are a teacher with experience you can make good money, and yes the scenery is beautiful.

As for the international clinic, that I am not aware of but they do have English speaking physicians on the island.

A great way to get more information is to head up this forum on Yahoo groups called Rhymes with Jeju, and go to www.jejulife.net. This is an online English magazine that informs newbies on the island, and the magazine recently set up a forum as well, called jeju life forums.

There's an article of all the English speaking physicians on the island.

Safe journeys

Wrong for 1. They DO pay less, but the cost of living is most certainly not cheaper. If anything, somethings will cost you more money. For example, alot (all?) of the heating there uses gasoline (petrol) instead of natural gas. You have to pay about 100,000won extra for your heat each month. It costs money to import certain things there, too, and you pay for that.

The pay is less mainly because people earn less. Those people are the consumers of English lessons (their kids, mostly), and so the demand curve isnt as high, there.

For 2, sure, you can make good money there if you have more experience. Still not nearly as much as you could in Seoul or even other medium sized Korean cities. See the part above about lower demand for English.

For 3, yes, Jeju is probably one of the most beautiful places in Korea... so I'd characterize it as a trade off between money/convenience/entertainment and living in a pretty/less populated place.

Actually PEST2, I never said they DON'T pay less, and for your information my director was the one that said the cost of living is cheaper on the island. Your only example is gas; there is so much more to consider.

I NEVER said you could or could not make more or less in Seoul, and most of the time if you are paid MORE money in Seoul the conditions are harder and you may run into problems (not saying you can't find a good school to teach at). As I experienced, and the teacher who's position I was going to take over, in which I was going to make more money, happily informed on that. His told me the "real" deal, when his boss wasn't around!

I have friends that live in Seoul and could vouche for what I am saying!

AND the demand for English on the island has risen.

Jeju is beautiful, and you should get a more "lived" in opinion, but that does not mean mine is not valid, as for YOU Pest2 maybe YOU should get your facts straight, and, well, get a life!

It is about supporting and helping each other not backfiring on others thoughts and experiences. Maybe you have friends, maybe you don't, either way get off my a**!

Take care and be well to all, and if you would like to know the "REAL" truth about the island I could link you with VERY informative and helpful people.

Safe journeys

I think it's a good start to the blog, and I'll check in to see how you're doing. If you want another person to reference, give them my name. I've been on the island for over 3 years now, spent 2 years on the mainland and I'm never going back to the mainland. Yes, the pay is higher, but so is every bad thing about Korea. I love Jeju, its beauty, its quietness, its friendliness, everything...except that I can't find Dr. Pepper down here.

And to answer that heating gas quote, wrong. I've never had a bill over 70,000 (my first month when I didn't understand how to use the heater way back in 2003) and it's normally around 35-40,000. On the mainland, I'd pay upwards of 100,000 for heating in the winter and about 80,000 for A/C in the summer. Down here, never that much.

I'm thinking about spending my winter break down there, and I'd have totally read your blog if you didn't *beep* it up so much in here. Makes me wonder what you're selling.

lol i know, it was a bad mistake of mine, and I apologize to everyone!

I am really not trying to sell anything, just got a little to amped, new move, new blog and some other stuff it was silly.

anyway the island is relaxed and beautiful. The people are chill, and kind. But it is all how you perceive and take things in. Everyone has different vibes.

anyway I hope your trip is good, and you enjoy yourself.

While you're down there, you don't know where I can get a deep tissue massage, some foi gras, and massive, hot jacuzzi tub for a couple of nights, eh?

That I do straphanger, but let me know what section you will stay in.
I just got a deep tissue massage and body stretch for an hour just the other day, and for only 40, 000 won.
I am heading to the bath house next week.
