I'm helping a friend by looking over contracts he is considering. He got one today from WONJU SAHM-YOOK MIDDLE SCHOOL. It proclaims in English it is a Gangwon-do Provincial contract, but also claims he would be a GEPIK teacher and doesn't contain the standard clauses that would be expected in Gangwon-do and has what I think are some fishy clauses. It also doesn't match their advertisement on this site in some significant ways.
Perhaps this school has just tried to paste together a contract from various places, but combined with the fact it is significantly different from the ad, I'm seeing some red flags.
Does anyone know anything about Sahmyook Middle School?
Could someone post a standard Gangwon-do contract?
Thanks. |

I'm familiar with some teachers who have taught at Samyook, here in Wonju. Nobody has ever claimed it to be a great gig, but Samyook has always paid on time and has always fulfilled its contractual obligations. At the same time however, the administration is difficult to work with and apparently there are personality clashes between some of the foreign teachers. Also, it's a religious school, so if superstition isn't your thing, I'd avoid. |

Samyook is operated by the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Their headquarters are in Dondaemoon in Seoul.
This organisation ripped me off for a ton of money in 2007 and were heartless in more than a few ways. P.M. me for the details. |

I cannot speak specifically to the middle school, but I worked for the elementary. The contract they used at the time was nothing like the standard one I have seen for either SMOE or the GEPIK contract that my BF had (he worked in another province for GEPIK, though). My BF and I had very different contracts. Unfortunately, he does not have a copy any longer.
My contract had some "unusual" clauses. Also, the elementary school did some really negative stuff at the end of my contract, involving money and other things. Please bear in mind that the middle school and elementary school are run by different admins, and that the admin treated me very differently than some wonderful teachers. What Thiuda has said is essentially correct, excepting the very end of my contract.
What I have heard of the middle school is only hearsay, so not appropriate to post here. Although my experience is not directly related, you can PM if you would like. |
