What's the catch?

I've seen a few job listings at universities promising four months' paid vacation a year. There has got to be a catch, or are these for real?

I can't comment on individual universities, but for the ones I know there is no catch.

Well the "catch" is that the salary is lower than sometimes even hogwans, some listings you might notice 2.0 million, even 1.9 or so, but yeah you get the time off, though some do have vacation programs where you can make extra money if you work them. The other thing is that very few universities offer housing, and if they do it's usually a dorm room or maybe a studio. I've been in Korea for 11 years and taught at a university for 3.5 years. It was a good experience, but I was paying 600 000 won a month for being able to live in the University's staff housing which while it was nice took a big chunk out of my salary, needless to say. Being married and having a child on the way I went to teach at a high school which was enjoyable in it's own right. There I had a decent size apartment provided, made more money, yet obviously got much less vacation time.
So in my opinion if you're single, not too worried about the salary and like to travel, by all means a university gig is the way to go. Good luck....

I took a job with two months' holiday, and I thought I was doing good--but man, four months! I can't imagine.

no catch, no salary reduction, no "voluntary" intensive programs or non-credit overtime...at least at the few good jobs left.

12 months though? ha. i'd love that.

Ok Im sold on the holiday!!!! But as a newbie with no experience I dont know if I would be able to work in a university.
I only have a 20 TEFL course (which I have recently found out to be quite useless) and a BSc in Psychology.
Is that enough to apply to a university?

Sure, that is enough to apply. Getting consideration is another thing altogether. It has been said on this site many times that it is fairly difficult to get a uni position with minimal qualifications, especially without having some networking contact. Good luck, regardless!

Sounds like you won a lottery! Lucky cool katz get all the fun of being on permanent vacation. 12 months a year. Laughing

My ultimate dream life would be 12 months a year off, plenty of money, just wake at 10AM every day, have coffee and breakfast, go workout, and just do hobbies and various fun activities like take trips to nice resorts and do extreme sports and adventure trip things. Just plain focus on living life to its' fullest is what I'd do.

i have two friends that work at the same uni and have four month paid vacations. the pay is not what i would command, but they have 25pyeong pads with ovens. so who cares?

the catch is that they are far north of Nowon ... to each his own.

At ours, we get over 5 months paid vacation and make well over 3 million a month. So... no "catch."
